Types Of GREAT Anime Waifus Youre Always Bound To Come Across

15+ Types Of GREAT Anime Waifus You’re Always Bound To Come Across

Types of anime waifus.

There are plenty of them at this point seeing as waifus have been a thing since the 2000s.

Though you could say the 90s, it just wasn’t “trendy” during that time.

In this post we’ll take about:

  • The types of waifus.
  • Tropes associated with certain waifus.
  • The most common waifu types that always pop up.

And why they’re popular, continue to get attention, and things along those lines.

Let’s get started.

1. The “dere dere” waifu

Chisato lycoris recoil smiling

These types of waifus or anime girls just might be the most popular out there. I mean there in all sorts of:

  • Rom-com.
  • Romance.
  • Slice of life.
  • Fantasy.
  • Shounen.
  • Supernatural.

And other types of anime series where the female MC is likeable, appreciable, and tends to win “best girl” of the year polls or awards consistently.

A good example of this is the main female character Chisato from Lycoris Recoil (S2 announced by the way).

She’s the in-your-face type of character, Energetic, cute, extroverted, and annoying to the average introvert. And this always makes for a chemistry that’s comedic between this type of “waifu” and the introverted MC who may be male or female.

Their energy is what makes them attractive aside from their looks.

2. The “sweet and innocent” waifu

Nagisa Furukawa cute dango eating

A good example that jumps into my mind is Nagisa Furukawa from Clannad, a Kyoto Animation series modelled after “Kanon” that came earlier in the 2000s era.

She’s sweet because she’s genuinely kind, honest, and caring of others. Sometimes to a fault. She’s “innocent” because of her situation which I won’t mention for spoiler reasons.

All in all, though she’s a well-written character who’s more than just innocent looking.

These types of waifus are endearing to anime fans, and these types are still being made in 2023 and beyond.

3. The “maid” waifu

Rem and Ram cute maids

This one isn’t as common as some others since you don’t always see these types of characters who are maids in particular. But they exist, they’re popular, and people love them.

The obvious example that comes to mind is Rem and Ram from Re:Zero for different reasons between them.

They’re sisters, yes, but their individual personalities, styles, hair colours, actions, and how they relate to the story are unique, have chemistry to them, and they have likeable traits to different fans.

Of course, this all starts with the fact they’re maids, and they dress like maids as well.

A more recent example is Lilith from the anime “The Maid I Hired Recently Is Suspicious”.

4. The “introvert” waifu

Fuyutsuki San cute cat ep 2

A recent example of this is the character Fuyutsuki San from Ice Guy And The Cool Female Colleague. She’s introverted, calm, quiet, and doesn’t use more words than is needed to express herself.

This is a relatable aspect for many people who are introverts.

Fuyutsuki is also attractive based on her style, aesthetics, how she dresses, and the way she communicates with others.

Of course, this waifu type is predicated on introversion, with everything else being a bonus.

5. The “Tsundere” waifu

shana shakugan no shana tsundere black hair

Can’t make a list like this without mentioning the Tsundere types because they’re the real deal. And they’re one of the most famous even to this day.

It all started with characters like:

  • Kaname Chidori (Full Metal Panic).
  • Shana (Shakugan No Shana).
  • Taiga Aisaka (Toradora).

Or other members of the 4 Tsundere wonders.

You could say it started earlier with Lina Inverse from Slayers in the 1990s. Or Vegeta in DBZ.

Tsundere mean the opposite of what they say and do the opposite of what they really feel. But tend to warm up to the love interest later on and become more honest and open with their emotions (like Nagi Sanzenin).

6. The “cold” waifu

Yukinoshita Yukino cold

The first character that comes to my mind is Yukinoshita Yukino from Oregairu. She appears to be a cold, savage, nonchalant type of female character in the series.

She’s so brutal it seems like she’s an unfriendly person to anyone looking from the outside. Especially when it comes to romance.

As we learn there’s more to this character than meets the eye, and the “cold” aspect of Yukinoshita doesn’t define her entire character at all.

Another character similar to this is Homura Akemi from Madoka Magica in the anime’s main timeline.

7. The “mom” waifu

carol olston mom

Let’s keep it real. When it comes to anime, more so in recent years or the last decade, the “mom” type of waifu has become more and more popular. Maybe it’s because of Hentai and Ecchi.

The anime Tomo Chan Is A Girl is a current example right now. You have Tomo’s mum, Misuzu’s mum, and Carol’s mum, all 3 of which have become popular with memes about it.

They have personalities different (or similar) to the main characters, but good enough to the point where they become likeable parts of the overall series.

Usually to the point of being memorable, relevant characters in a sense.

8. The “tomboy” waifu

Mikoto Misaka tomboy railgun

Characters like:

  • Revy Rebecca (Black Lagoon).
  • Tomo Aizawa (Tomo Chan Is A Girl).
  • Mikoto Misaka (A Certain Scientific Railgun).
  • Rukia Kuchiki (Bleach).

These are good examples of tomboy waifus who have become popular over time. You could say it started with anime shows like You’re Under Arrest in the 1990s with characters like Natsumi Tsujimoto.

These types of characters are hot, aesthetically pleasing, can sometimes fight and know martial arts, or they just dress like tomboys would despite having feminine charm they tend not to exploit.

9. The “muscular” waifu

Maki Oze muscle

Characters like this would be Maki Oze from Fire Force. Or Valmet from Jormungand. Both characters have a military background, are physically fit, attractive, and have their own quirks.

They both also have six-packs, have martial arts or combat experience, and can more than hold themselves in a fight.

I won’t say they’re the most famous types of waifus in anime, but they’re up there which is why they’re on this list.

10. The “badass” waifu

Rumi Usagiyama badass

Characters of this “badass” trope are people like:

  • Erza Scarlet (Fairy Tail).
  • Balsa Yonsa (Guardian Of The Sacred Spirit).
  • Satsuki Kiryuin (Kill La Kill).
  • Kagura Mikazuchi (Fairy Tail).
  • Ryuko Matoi (Kill La Kill).
  • Rumi Usagiyama (MHA).

These types of female characters are almost cliche, but it’s not in a bad way. In fact, people love this type of cliche as long as it’s done right.

Erza Scarlet is loved for a lot of reasons, her backstory, tenacity, strength, and finesse being a few of the reasons. But when she’s in battle is artistic and one of the main highlights of Fairy Tail.

This is also true for Mirko from MHA, especially with her big introduction to MHA S6.

11. The “intellectual” waifu

Levy Mcgarden smart

You know the type. They’re smart, witty, create their own products, are creative, can sometimes be scientists, and so on.

Good examples are:

  • Kotomi Ichinose (Clannad).
  • Bulma (Dragon Ball Z).
  • Levy Mcgarden (Fairy Tail).
  • Sumire Muroto (Black Bullet).

Kotomi is considered a genius academically and has an active mind that seeks out education.

Bulma is a scientist who’s known for creating innovative products, while still being down to earth (more so in later seasons).

Levy is grounded, intelligent, has saved people many times, and is more useful than she appears to be.

Sumire is a weirdo but is beyond useful, strong, witty, and has good chemistry with the MC.

These types of waifus are always sought after.

12. The “Loli” waifu

Tatsumaki Tornado green eyes

This one is controversial when it comes to platforms like Twitter because it’s what people focus on. And they tend to take it out of context.

Characters like:

  • Rory Mercury (GATE JSDF).
  • Tatsumaki Tornado (One Punch Man).
  • Ilulu (Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid).
  • Beelzebub (I’ve Been Killing Slimes For 300+ Years).
  • Kinue Hayase (Masamune Kun No Revenge).

These characters are either hundreds of years older than they look, they’re small for their age, they’re short in general, or the anime is deliberately using it as a comedic pun.

Either way, they’re popular.

13. The “artificial intelligence” waifu

Diva Vivy Fluorite Eyes Song headphones

You have a lot of these who’ve popped up over the years.

Characters like:

  • Diva (Vivy Fluorite Eye’s Song).
  • Chi (Chobits).
  • Motoko Kusagagi (Ghost In The Shell).
  • Sigel (Ah My Goddess).

Of all the character types I’ve seen, Diva is a favourite to me. And the anime she’s from is one of the most stunning pieces of art you’ll ever see in film or anime.

This “waifu” type is in less demand than others, but still popular.

14. The “furry” waifu (or another animal)

kanade beast tamer

Fox girls, cat girls, dragon girls, demon girls, snake girls… This is a waifu type no doubt, but it’s also in the fetish category of female anime characters.

Tania from Beast Tamer (2022) is a dragon waifu type. Monster Musume has a snake girl for a female love interest. Tohru from Kobayahsi’s Dragon Maid, etc.

Or demon girls from High School DxD.

Anime fans love this type of character which is why the industry keeps pumping it out. You can blame it on Hentai.

15. The “ideal” waifu who’s less cliche

mahiru shiina cute waifu

Shiina Mahiru from the airing anime The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten is the best example to make of this waifu type.

She acts and has the personality of a woman you’d consider to be your wife in the most literal way possible. This makes her more of a normal character compared to a cliche or trope character (like Tsundere).

Shiina is technically boring because of this if you view anime in a dramatic sense or in a cliche sense, and that’s why characters like Shiina are part of the “ideal” type.

Another example would be Shiori Shinomiya (Sakura Quest).
