15+ Overrated Anime Shows That Are Decent, But NOT Masterpieces

Overrated anime shows is a subjective argument in itself.

No anime fan truly shares the same opinion on this unless they’re jumping on the bandwagon to avoid getting so called “roasted”.

People fear criticism as if it means death by hanging.

With over 500+ anime under my belt, I’ve seen a lot, dropped a lot, and that affects how I see certain anime.

The following anime are average, decent, or good, but definitely overrated in my eyes.

Here they are.

1. Angel Beats

Angel Beats is an anime that’s over hyped. That was more true years back than it is today, but it still counts.

The anime is famous and even has well over 1M members on MyAnimeList for what it’s worth.

So what’s my beef with it? It just didn’t click with me. Only thing I really liked was one of the characters: Kanade Tachibana.

That’s mostly down to her personality. As for the story, it has a good premise but It feels bland in how they go about portraying it.

On top of the basic action (basic, NOT good), and the many characters who are forgettable, it disappoints.

Had my expectations not been so high because of hype, I may have felt different about it.

2. Anohana

Anohana has a similar problem to Angel Beats, even though they’re not the most similar shows.

The anime is mainly about Menma, a cute white haired girl who died and her friends and mother are still grieving.

Turns out Menma is still around as a ghost, and she’s able to see the pain and suffering people are going through.

The main characters in a nutshell, end up seeing Menma in the end and it leads to a supposed emotional set of episodes.

Truth is, like Angel Beats, how they want about it makes it bland. And in the case of Anohana, childish and too exaggerated for it to feel genuine.

The art style has something going for the anime at least. But in the hands of another studio, it could have had more impact.

I feel the same way about the anime movie Your Name.

3. Attack On Titan

Attack On Titan…. An anime that has BLOWN UP since 2013. And has gone on to be one of the most successful anime of all time.

That I won’t deny. It’s a FACT after all. I’ll even say it’s a classic as far as its standing in the anime industry.

That said, it’s a tad overrated for me. Unlike #1 and #2, I think Attack On Titan is decent regardless. But overrated without a doubt.

I still haven’t watched S4, but I doubt my feelings will change on this one.

Again, it’s decent, but NOT a masterpiece in my eyes. The art style, animation… These are the anime’s strong points.

Not so much the protagonist (Eren).

4. My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!

My Next Life As A Villainess is an Isekai everyone’s been losing their mind over since maybe 2019?

Whatever the year was when it released, its been doing well. And from what I’ve seen, it’s a good series.

Not brilliant, but good.

Problem is there are Isekai series MUCH better than this that aren’t getting as much attention. Ascendance Of A Bookworm blows it out the water.

Aside from all that, it’s a decent series with a good MC and comedy. But it’s being overcompensated for what it actually brings to the table.

Crunchyroll 2021 anime awards judges (not including myself) kissed its ass a bit too much.

5. One Punch Man

OPM has done a killer job since the beginning. I mean, how many anime do you know of that have amassed so many sales off just 1 season?

Season 1 of One Punch Man is obviously the best, with season 2’s fault being that it was done by a different studio.

Saitama’s a relatable character who despite being overpowered, has obvious flaws, weaknesses, and is even depressed and a bit empty in his life.

As far as heroes, he’s in a lane of his own, and it’s a selling point for the anime.

That all said, it’s overrated. It’s a good series, but its qualities are exaggerated a bit.

6. Pokemon

Pokemon is a funny series and an even funnier franchise. It’s the BIGGEST anime series to have ever been created.

Not just that, but Pokemon is literally one of the biggest brands in the world. It’s too successful to consider an “anime” in the strictest sense.

That aside, the anime isn’t all that. And it’ll never reach masterpiece level.

The franchise’s power is really what gives the anime so much power in the first place.

By itself, the anime’s quality doesn’t match the Pokemon brand overall.

7. Log Horizon

Log Horizon is always pointed out as an alternative to SAO. Some will even say it’s better than Sword Art Online (SAO).

I’ve watched season 1 and 2. Season 3 apparently dropped in quality, but that’s another story.

Log Horizon is a good series. I’d give it an 8. And I’d definitely never go lower than 7.

It’s not better than Sword Art Online for one, but the anime itself is overrated in its genre. And isn’t as great as some fans make it out to be.

8. Deadman Wonderland

Deadman Wonderland is one of the worst anime of all time. I stand on that one.

It’s BAD.

Few anime make it to the lower than 5/10 pile in my 500+ catalog. Deadman Wonderland made it there without struggle.

First of all you have the most annoying MC of all time. It’s understandable logically because he’s just a kid who’s thrown into a death match with grown adults and sh*t.

He’s forced to do things he has no business doing. He’s gutless and only a teenager.

Still, he drags down the entire series with his constant BS. Shiro is the better character (white hair) but nothing brilliant.

The action and the violence overdo it a lot and it just becomes violence porn at some point.

9. Black Butler

Black Butler is an anime series about Ciel, the queen’s dog (literally). He does her dirty work, and it’s all based in London.

It’s in a British context.

His butler Sebastian makes the show more comical, and both work together as they do underhanded sh*t and take part in the underworld.

I can see why female fans would love this (which they do), but it’s overrated otherwise.

At best it’s decent and it does have its good points. It’s just not what fans hype it up to be.

10. Sailor Moon

Sailor Moon is a classic series and I’ve said it who knows how many times. It’s responsible for anime’s growth outside Japan, and the industry blowing up ultimately.

It’s also responsible for the magical girl genre becoming what it has years and years later.

That said, I can’t sit here and act like the anime isn’t overrated. It’s not that great and really only worked because of the audience it targeted way back when.

It’s like Pokemon in that way. Unless you grew up on it, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to get into it or enjoy the series with all its cliches, tropes, and lackluster fights, etc.

It’s not as if Shoujo can’t be enjoyable, I have plenty I like. Sailor Moon is decent, but not the best when you analyze it.

11. Demon Slayer Season 1

YouTube video

Demon Slayer, or anime I’ll never forget. I’ll say that much, even if I feel it’s overrated.

People were begging me to watch it back in late 2019, and so I did. And surprisingly it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.

I enjoyed Fire Force more in comparison (they aired at the same time) but even still.

After I fully watched Demon Slayer though, I couldn’t help but feel like it was oversold and over hyped.

Was it good? Yes. But NOT the masterpiece everyone was claiming it was. People were too busy wanking over the visuals and aesthetics.

The sister dynamic is its strong point. I’ve never seen anything like it. But It’s not a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination.

I’m glad it opened doors for new fans, and made so much money for the anime industry, but that doesn’t mean I have to over hype it.

12. The Promised Neverland

I’ve been saying this from the VERY beginning. The Promised Neverland is overrated, over hyped, and oversold.

Everyone was losing their minds over the first episode, and after watching it, it was easy to see why.

The first episode drags you in and then vaguely introduces you to the darkness that’s yet to come. Only to not really be so dark as the episodes fly by.

The comparisons to Death Note were a JOKE. It can’t even be considered Death Note‘s little brother.

I thought season 2 might turn that around, but we all know how that disaster turned out.

13. Made In Abyss S1

Made In Abyss season 1 is another anime that was slightly over hyped by the anime community. But did it live up to expectations?

I watched the entire series. The mystery, the curiosity the anime gives you, and the weird humor between the kids.

Made In Abyss is actually a decent series, but I won’t call it a masterpiece just yet. It’s too overrated as it stands.

When season 2 comes out and we get to see more, only then will I decide if the anime is more than the hype claims to be.

For now though, I’ll say it has potential. But that’s it. Admittedly the last set of episodes are emotional as F.

14. Noragami

Noragami is another anime that’s decent. The visuals are stunning, it’s by Studio Bones (a favorite), and the characters aren’t awful.

You have Yato, who’s basically a God who’s poor as F. And Hiyori, a girl who joins Yato and sticks by him.

They all journey together and run into trouble along the way.

Can’t help but say for how it’s hyped, the anime is overrated and doesn’t match the hype in quality.

It’s a good series, but no way is it in masterpiece territory. Or even close to that.

That’s just the effects of hype, it colors your perception sometimes.

15. Parasyte: The Maxim

Parasyte the Maxim gets so much praise, at least from a good number of anime fans. And usually often.

It’s a horror series about Kenichi,a teenager who almost has his brain eaten by a parasite. But instead it takes over his arm.

Both the parasite, which is intelligent, and Kenichi, have to put up with each other and end up growing a sort of bond together.

The anime does have its thought provoking moments, and quite dark episodes as the main protagonist adapts to his new lifestyle.

But…. I can’t call this a masterpiece. It reminds me of Demon Slayer, meaning it’s overrated, but it’s NOT a terrible anime series.

There are so many more Horror shows are better (Higurashi, School Live), and so on.

Other anime:

  • Danmachi.
  • Ergo Proxy.
  • Paprika.
  • Death Parade.
  • Steins Gate.

What anime would you consider overrated?
