25 Of The Most Awful Anime I’ve Ever Watched

Everyone has opinions but few are brave enough to share it. Because of the fear of criticism and being ostracized.

But as a Wise man once said:

“To avoid criticism.. Say nothing, do nothing, be nothing.” – Unknown

I never had an interest in making my own jail cell and locking my opinions in it.

So here are 26 of the worst anime series I’ve ever watched.

26 Worst Anime List:

1. Trinity Seven

9 Of The Most Awful Anime Series You Should Never Lay Eyes On

Trinity Seven is an Ecchi/school/fantasy series. Let’s not forget this is a blatant harem, too.

The problem with the harem genre is it’s done so terribly. And Trinity Seven is one of its poorest victims.

To me it’s crazy an anime like Trinity Seven is almost as highly rated as Haganai: I Don’t Have Many Friends. Which is also a harem, but executed better.

It’s just trashy fan service and the same old bland protagonist and nothing more than that.

2. Deadman Wonderland

9 Of The Most Awful Anime Series You Should Never Lay Eyes On

Maybe it’s because I watched the dubbed version instead of the original. But it’s still a bullsh** series.

The action felt forced, as if it was using violence to excuse the animes poor characters and uninteresting story.

And the main character? Oh my. Let’s not even get started on the little guy. Too painful to watch and listen to.

I get that characters starting off “weak” is necessary to make the stronger later, but the main protagonist in this anime is so badly done.

The constant b*tching and rushed plot killed it for me.

3. My First Girlfriend Is A Gal

9 Of The Most Awful Anime Series You Should Never Lay Eyes On

Your first girlfriend is a gal, is she?

First of all: the anime name is awful, which is a huge problem. Most anime’s don’t get watched BECAUSE the title is basic.

But I’m open minded, so I gave Hajimete a try. But of course the anime’s poor jokes, rotten comedy and dialogue made me throw up in a bucket.

And the harem/Ecchi was nothing new. Just a copy and paste. Nothing special.

The nail in the coffin was the insane pedo friend and the hardcore “jokes” that come with it.

4. Nagi No Asukara

nagi no asukara boring anime 1

Watched this anime from start to finish. In fact – it was one of my first 30+ or so anime shows I came across.

The animation is nice. That’s the highlight of this series.

Characters feel OK, but the anime dragged on for too long and the quality starts to go downhill from there.

One of the worst and most bland romance shows I’ve seen since I started watching anime.

5. The Familiar Of Zero

9 Of The Most Awful Anime Series You Should Never Lay Eyes On

It’s no surprise that this anime is also a harem series. So many harems are the equivalent of horse sh**.

If you enjoy watching a male character get beaten up and abused by his “female master”, then watch this. You’ll love it.

Especially when later on the two characters end up in a relationship. It’s like Stockholm syndrome to the extreme.

The main female character takes Tsundere to a whole new level of pain. And none of it is even justified. Just a guy being made out to be soft without any balls or a spine.

6. Love Tyrant

9 Of The Most Awful Anime Series You Should Never Lay Eyes On

One of the worst anime series of 2017.

Love Tyrant is a rip off harem version of Death Note. Where the main character is able to write someone’s name in a “kiss note”, causing the person to fall madly in love.

I’ve watched some extreme parody series before, but this anime tried harder than a constipated person on the toilet.

And in the end, it’s just an anime that made me cringe and face-palm at the attempts to be “funny”.

7. Beyond The Boundary

9 Of The Most Awful Anime Series You Should Never Lay Eyes On

The main character swings a sword that uses her own blood to wield it.

She’s cute, silly, clumsy, and a little eccentric. Sounds like a perfectly “anime that anyone can like, right?

Sadly, these characteristics weren’t enough to make this anime worth my time. And that’s surprising because it’s produced by Kyoto Animation.

The action makes me sigh at how elementary it is. And the timing between the action is even worse.

To think Beyond the Boundary is considered “emotional” is confusing. But I guess I just don’t see the appeal.

8. Is This A Zombie?

9 Of The Most Awful Anime Series You Should Never Lay Eyes On

The whole concept of this show is beyond ridiculous. Which isn’t a bad thing by the way. Gintama is ridiculous, as is My Bride Is A Mermaid but they’re actually good.

Is This A Zombie feels more like a fetish show for anyone who wants to see guys dressed up as a “magical girl” in a dress. And get bossed around by a harem of girls.

I’m sure the comedy has its place but it didn’t do it for me.

Each to their own I guess, seeing as a lot of anime fans enjoyed this series.

9. From The New World

9 Of The Most Awful Anime Series You Should Never Lay Eyes On

The worst horror series I’ve ever layed eyes on.

The worst aspect of this show is the pacing. They rushed the story much too fast. And it goes over your head if you don’t pay attention.

That’s not a bad thing in itself because Monogatari has similar vibes. But the difference is in how its paced and how it keeps you interested in comparison.

Half way through this series you’ll be wondering WTF is even happening, as the story and what it’s trying to portray is all over the place.

It’s as if they took the story, broke it into pieces, and threw each piece not knowing where it would land.

10. Btooom!

btooom anime screenshot

There’s such a thing as “pointless violence”. Btooom proves it. It’s “shocking violence” just for the sake of it.

The “rape” scene in the first couple of episodes is an example of this. I don’t feel like it held any purpose other than to make the female protagonist “snap” and nothing more.

Take away the violence and this anime falls flat on its face.

There’s really nothing else to say about it.

11. Conception

conception anime screenshot

It feels like another copy’n’paste of so many “supernatural” series that have come before it.

Not all anime are good enough for you to give an “explanation” as to why it’s so bad. And conception is one of em.

Even MAL ratings (which aren’t the be all/end all to be fair) ripped it to shreds.

Terrible 2018 anime series.

12. Fate Extra: Last Encore

fate extra last encore anime

I can’t even believe this is a FATE series. It feels like since Fate Zero, the fate series has been “slightly” going down hill.

Fate Apocrypha is the best one since Fate Stay Night.

Fate Extra on the other hand felt like the writers didn’t know where they wanted to take it, or at what pace they wanted to move the plot forward.

It was all over the place (and the protagonist doesn’t help being as mediocre as it gets).

Fate Extra was so bad I almost lost hope for FATE as a franchise.

13. Mirai Nikki Redial

mirai nikki redial anime

Mirai Nikki Redial is a mess. I’m a big fan of the original Mirai Nikki series, and loved the anime in general.

This “add on” to the original story felt out of place though. Like an unnecessary piece to the puzzle that has no reason to be there.

If this add on to Mirai Nikki was taken out of the picture, the ending would have been more satisfying. And I feel that way regardless of watching it to the end.

Massive disappointment.

14. Anohana

anohana anime screenshot

Even if something isn’t realistic, if it’s relatable then that’s enough to fill in the gaps.

Anohana is a BAD example of this kind of fiction.

Instead of weeping at the ending, I face-palmed myself and wondered how I was even tricked into watching it.

The concept sounds good at first (a ghost who’s the best friend of the characters). But the whole crying at the end didn’t feel natural to me at all. I can see kids “feeling” a certain way about it.

It’s a shame because Anohana had its good points but it fell so hard.

Another anime I feel wasted its potential.

15. Darling In The Franxx

darling in the franxx screenshot zero two

After recently watching Gurren Lagann myself, now I understand how bad Darling In The Franxx really is. And why people say it “copied” Gurren Lagann and other shows.

What bothers me about Darling In The Franxx is I had so much faith in what this series could have done.

The hype was “real”. Most people would agree.

But then Studio Trigger and A1 Pictures started smoking weed and getting high on who knows what, because it all went to sh** and none of it made sense anymore.

I’ve never seen a series turn out so badly in my entire history of watching anime.

Zero Two is probably the only character worth any salt. And maybe Ichigo. But the story itself and lack of direction is what killed its potential.

16. Date A Live

kurumi tokisaki date a live screencap

Date A Live… an ecchi series that’s more popular than I’m able to comprehend.

It’s just a bland series with the most bland main protagonist, and some of the most laughable action I’ve seen.

I couldn’t stomach watching season 2 after the first season. Well, that’s a lie. I did watch season 2 only to realize it didn’t offer enough to keep me interested.

I get that it’s a harem series, but it’s no different than 100’s of harems. So it’s not a cup of tea worth finishing.

17. High School Of The Dead

high school of the dead fan service gif

High School Of The Dead is an Ecchi series. But if you watch it without looking up, you’re bound to be disappointed within the first few episodes.

Why? This is also a horror series that takes every chance it gets to shove fan service down your throat.

And that’s EVEN during a scene where zombies are trying to feed on the main characters.

I mean – it’s not like the zombies are gonna get a kick out of the fan-service and hot girls. Or constant booty and tiddie-shots.

It’s a bit much to deal with.

Take away the distractions and this anime could have been better. But it dragged down the quality too much for me.

18. Your Name (Kimi No Na Wa)

your name kimi no na wa movie

Your Name is like a barbie doll.

It looks beautiful on the outside. The animation is stunning.

I’m sure this is what tricked (not literally) most teenagers into giving it a rating of OVER 9/10 on MyAnimeList. But then again – your teenage years is when your emotions are different.

But anyway – like a barbie doll, it’s a lifeless empty shell. With no depth at all. It feels more like acting, making it seem forced and exaggerated when expressing itself.

No amount of “make-up” can hide your flaws, and I feel the same way about Your Name.

19. 5 Centimeters Per Second

5 centimeters per second movie screencap

For the “sad, emotional” movie it’s claimed to be… I’ve seen more emotion come out of Google’s Assistant after saying “OK Google”, than I did this so called masterpiece.

It’s like watching paint dry while tied to a chair and having your mouth sealed shut.

The boredom is enough to drive you out of your mind. Or my mind at least.

Does it need more of an explanation than that?

Violet Evergarden is the 10X better alternative in more ways than I can count.

20. Chobits

chobits anime show

Chobits seems like a good anime for how unique it comes off as. And it was ahead of its time when it comes to androids and robot girls.

This is something we’re starting to see as far as technology goes.

But the anime itself? It’s really just mediocre and there’s nothing GREAT that stands out about it. But I’ll give it credit for being innovative to a degree.

The romance between the main characters gets a little stale and just doesn’t have enough flare to keep it interesting for me.

21. Special A

special a anime series

Special A is like a “sh*tty” version of Maid Sama. Both shows are comedy/romance with similar looking main characters and designs.

Personally I watched Special A first before Maid Sama.

But it’s clear Special A when all is said and done, is the inferior version of the two. Even if it did have some “OK” moments.

Keep in mind I watched the dub, so that could have played a part (unlikely).

22. Angel Beats

YouTube video

Angel Beats is one of those anime shows that are so popular and well-known in the anime community. It’s amazing how many people sing praises for it.

It was music to my hears until I paid attention to the melody.

angel beats anime series

The so called emotional appeal is overrated. I didn’t feel anything for the characters because the connection wasn’t there and it did a mediocre job of getting their feelings across.

The thing with “emotional appeal” is it takes time to help you “really” connect to a character. Pacing matters here, as well as backstory or something meaningful to tie things together.

Violet Evergarden does this well, but Angel Beats doesn’t.

The theme itself might be sad, but it doesn’t deserve to be called “one of the best anime” like everyone claims it is as far as I see it.

Massive disappointment.

23. Katana Maidens

YouTube video

Katana Maidens is a special case. It reminds me of Darling In The Franxx.

Katana Maidens starts out strong, and unlike MOST anime – the theme and story is unique with a lot of realistic/historic references.

The creators did a good job of making sure everything about Katana Maidens was original from the start.

But as is the case with anime like this, later on it falls apart and forgets what its trying to accomplish all together.

katana maidens anime series

The choreography in the fights felt like poetry in motion, but then it started to feel “average”.

Fan service creeped its way into episodes as it started to lose its appeal. And that “special feeling” disappeared as the story continued to get more confusing and lazy as for as writing goes.

It could have been the next “female Bleach”, but in the end it’s forgotten and nothing worth praising.

24. Blame Movie

blame movie anime

Blame Movie looks so good on the surface. It reminds me of The Garden Of Words.

Both anime are beautiful, gorgeous, and the visuals look solid in Blame. Well, from some angles and to some degree.

Blame’s downfall was not just the awful CGI you see play out through the movie, but the plot itself.

I didn’t feel involved with the characters. Everything felt even worse than mediocre and generic. The opposite of what y expectations were (based on what people said).

Not just a worst anime movie, but also anime overall.

25. The Garden Of Words (Movie)

The Garden Of Words is a beautiful anime.

The HYPE surrounding this movie is no joke when it comes to the insane animation quality.

It doesn’t even feel like an anime.

garden of words screenshot beautiful

Take this screenshot as an example. Look at the DETAIL of the water, the stones, the greenery and even the shoes of the main characters.

Each scene can be analyzed to death because there’s so much detail it’s flipping nuts.

the garden of words main female character detail

In this scene we have a close up of the female main character, and the detail that’s shown in her design.

I talk a lot about how anime designs these days aren’t as unique and how creators seem to make less effort.

But looking at the sheer quality in this anime leaves you with disbelief.

the garden of words lake

And here we have a scene of the lake I guess? And the main characters looking out at it from a “side” view.

It looks so realistic it can’t even be called an anime. The studio nailed it with the visuals.

And that’s what makes this 45 minute anime movie so disappointing.

  • It looks stunning
  • Design quality is out of this world
  • The detail is unreal

But the story? And the characters? They lack so much depth it’s painful to watch.

No substance.

It’s like drooling over a cheesecake and then biting into it to realize it has no taste. And doesn’t even taste sweet.

I feel like the creators tried to shove too much into a 45+ minute movie.

The romance is like watching paint dry and can’t be compared to an anime series like Clannad, or whatever example you wanna use.

the garden of words crying

All that “crying” and so called emotions are bland. They’re bland because the movie doesn’t give you enough time to warm to the characters, or understand and relate to what’s happening.

They did an awful job of it. There’s little connection.

That’s why for me it’s one of the worst anime I’ve watched.

If it wasn’t for the high production values and unreal visuals, The Garden Of Words would NOT have done well as a movie (popularity wise).

I think the visuals hypnotized fans into giving it a good rating because of how good it looks vs everything else it has to offer.

It looks so good I’m not surprised.

Other Anime I Dislike:

  • Kaze No Stigma.
  • Unbreakable Machine Doll.

My purpose is never to be hurt anyone’s feelings or be a d*ck. I’m passionate as F so it’ll come across like that.

But opinions are opinions, and I won’t “pretend” just to please anyone, or bow down to consensus.
