Shakugan No Shana Wallpaper Flame Haze

23+ Recommended Anime With More Than One Main Character

Anime shows with more than one main character. This is more common than it seems on the surface.

You have anime shows with secondary protagonists, and eve tritagonists (third in importance).

As long as they come under the protagonist or main character label, it qualifies.

Here are some official anime that accurately portray this.

1. Shakugan No Shana

Shakugan No Shana is a nostalgia series for me. Made by J.C Staff, it’s an anime that released early 2000’s.

The light novel came out even earlier than that (earlier than Naruto in fact).

In this world there are:

  • Humans.
  • Torches (humans who will soon disapear from existence).
  • Crimson Denizens (demons and demon lords).
  • Flame Haze (warriors who fight denizens and protect the world).

The story is about Shana, a flame haze who meets a torch (another MC) with a treasure tool that keeps him alive.

Their romance and partnership is what ultimately drives the plot forward for 3 seasons.

Almost all of the characters can freeze time casually. And are some of the most powerful the industry has ever introduced.

2. Little Witch Academia

Atsuko, Sucy and Lotte.

There’s another character who’s a “main” but that’s not necessary to mention here.

The anime is about Atsuko who joins a school to become a witch, despite not having any innate talent for it. And is mocked, criticized, and made fun of for attempting to.

In a way she’s like a female version of Deku as far as her challenges, but she’s more extroverted in comparison.

3. Magi: Labyrinth Of Magic

Alibaba, Aladdin, and Morgiana.

The first character you see is Aladdin in the middle. He represents the “Magi” in the title.

2nd is Alibaba, who’s a prince but far from the typical kind.

3rd is Morgiana, an ex slave trying to adjust to her new world of having “freedom”. And it’s portrayed so realistically you can put yourself in her shoes.

Underrated series.

It’s about the 3 characters travels, trials, tribulations, and the battles that come with it in this South Asian inspired world.

4. The Demon Girl Next Door

Yuuko and Momo.

Yuuko is a “demon girl” who’s only just discovered it after waking up with a tail and horns at random.

Momo is a magical girl, and a very powerful one who’s supposed to be at odds with demons but builds an odd friendship with Yuuko.

The anime is comical and a unique take on magical girls.

There’s even a 2nd season on it way.

5. Chrono Crusade

Chrono Crusade is about Rosette Christopher and Chrono, a demon.

They’re both main characters and they’re in a relationship together. So expect some romance.

Aside from the anime’s biblical, religious, and deep messages, Chrono Crusade does stand out with its romance and dual protagonists.

Watch this till the end and you’ll understand.

6. Planetarian

Yumemi & Junker.

A short series about a friendship/relationship between a robot girl and a militant man.

It’s one of the few series that doesn’t just have more than one main character, but they’re the ONLY characters in the entire series.

Can’t say more because of spoilers but it’s good.

7. Jujutsu Kaisen

Yuji, Megumi, Gojo, Nobara.

Yuji is the first “main” character we see. Megumi is next, followed by Gojo then Nobara Kugisaki.

Gojo is the “sensei” (in the middle) and the other 3 are one of the best trio’s in shonen if you ask me.

Some of the best writing I’ve seen in a while in this genre.

Has plenty of potential going forward.

8. Slayers

Slayers has Lina Inverse, the self proclaimed “beautiful sourcerers” who’s actually more powerful and dangerous than she seems.

The other main character is Gourry Gabriev, the self proclaimed “guardian” of Lina Inverse.

There’s 2 more relevant characters as well.

The anime’s plot is about Lina, her teammates, and the adventures they go on together. And their battles which lead to saving the world from time to time.

The comedy is underrated.

9. Minami-Ke

Chiaki, Kana, Haruka.

All of them are sisters, left to right is the order of age (ascending).

It’s a slice of life about their shenanigans, lifestyle, and what they get up to.

Genuinely one of the funniest series I’ve ever watched. Wouldn’t mind it being revived again, it has longevity.

Comparable in a way to The Daily Lives Of High School Boys.

10. Psycho Pass

Psycho Pass is one of the few police series, especially one that’s known and respected.

It’s about Akane Tsunemori, a new police officer learning on the job and who has a surprising amount of wit and intuition.

She works with Kogami, who’s another main character in Psycho Pass.

If you want a series with some of the best writing going, not to mention antagonists, this is it.

The futuristic world and setting is what sets apart this anime from any other.

11. Guardian Of The Sacred Spirit

Guardian Of The Sacred Spirit is a distinguished anime. It’s hard to find a series just like it for a lot of reasons.

The main character: Balsa s a female lead in this series, and the male lead is called Chakuro.

Balsa is his bodyguard as the prince is on the run.

Both characters build a bond and a parent-child relationship. And even though there’s some solid action scenes, it’s wholesome in other areas.

12. Sket Dance

Sket Dance is about 3 main characters who form a group to help others in need while in school.

  • Yusuke Fujisaki.
  • Hime Onizuka.
  • Switch.

Aside from the obvious parodies and tongue in cheek humor that mocks typical cliches, the plot doesn’t move forward without any of these 3 being present.

Unless it’s necessary (focusing on backstories, etc).

You can think of Sket Dance like an alternative to Gintama, with practically no fan service, nudity, or any extremes Gintama tends to use.

13. Higehiro

Higehiro is about Sayu Ogiwara, a girl who ran away from home. And Yoshida, the man who takes her in by happenstance.

He’s 25 years old, while Sayu is 17 years old.

After setting up arrangements, Sayu cooks, cleans, and takes care of the house while Yoshida does his usual job as a programmer.

The anime’s been controversial in Japan since release, and even in general to a smaller degree.

The story, the set up, and how it’s written is satisfying and will give you something new in the romance/drama genre.

14. Edens Zero

Edens Zero is basically Fairy Tail 2.0. Even the main characters like Lucy and Natsu are 2.0 versions in Edens Zero.

The main characters names are:

  • Shiki.
  • Rebecca.

In this world it’s futuristic, and the adventures are related to traveling around space and visiting different planets.

The world building of this anime is gonna be special (it’s still in its early stages as of July 2021).

15. Panty And Stocking With Garter Belt

YouTube video

Panty And Stocking With Garterbelt is a trashy Ecchi anime with some wild language and profanity for real.

It’s not the kind of anime you’d play in front of parents or even in public (like a Library).

Panty is the sister of Stocking, both of who are angels who’ve been banished from heaven for their behavior.

They’re on a mission to regain their place by destroying ghosts and what not.

16. Seitokai Yakuindomo

Seitokai Yakuindomo is about Tsuda, Shino, Suzu Hagimura and Shichijou.

All of them work in the student council and set the rules for their school.

Shino is sarcastic and deliberately takes things out of context (even sexual jokes, etc).

Shichijou is Shino’s partner in crime, and is a bit of an airhead.

Hagimura is the short girl who’s smart with a high IQ.

Tsuda is more of the observer to all the nonsense that plays out.

This anime isn’t for everyone. The jokes are extreme, the language is politically incorrect, and it does it all without relying on fan service.

17. Fullmetal Alchemist

Fullmetal Alchemist is about Edward Elric And Alphonse Elric. Brothers who made a mistake and have paid the ultimate price.

The law of equivalent exchange states for what you give, you’ll get an equal amount in return.

Both brothers learn that life isn’t so simple, and it’s more complicated than that.

Military, war, action, biblical references, Fullmetal Alchemist touches on a lot and is considered a masterpiece by many.

18. Cells At Work

Cells At Work is an anime that teaches you about:

  • Biology.
  • Cells in your body.
  • How it all works.
  • Your body health.

You learn about these things directly or indirectly as you go through the series.

Red Blood Cell and White Blood Cell are the main characters, one being female, the other male.

Who knew an anime about biology and cells could be so entertaining?

The shonen aspects are responsible for this, plus the comedy and wholesome episodes.

19. Inari Kon Kon

Inari Kon Kon is a Seinen series with fantasy elements and light romance. It’s a unique mix for the Seinen genre.

Inari Fushimi is the main character who’s been visiting the same shrine for years since childhood.

The other main character is Uka, the shrine Goddess who we found out has been watching over Inari for years.

Their wholesome relationship, the emotional, well articulated moments from a teenagers perspective, and the mature approach makes this anime a memorable one.

It’s just not the most known, it deserves more credit.

20. His And Her Circumstances

His And her Circumstances is an old school Shoujo anime. It’s an appreciated series in the genre, the same way something like Inuyasha is for Isekai or fantasy.

The main characters who become interested in each other, start out very differently.

Curiosity kills the cat and that’s how the romance begins to form.

You can think of this series as the original to shows like Maid Sama, and others just like it with a similar style.

21. Soul Eater

Soul Eater, made by Studio BONES, is one of the original Shonen anime even to this day. With its own flavor, style, and art that helps it stand out.

Maka Albarn is a miester who wields Soul, her weapon. Both are main characters.

They destroy demons and take their eggs to gain strength in a world where “madness” is rampant.

Madness is a metaphor for those who’ve lost their way and become demons as a result.

22. Kabaneri Of The Iron Fortress

Kabaneri Of The Iron Fortress is one of WIT studio’s best anime series. But like many others, Attack On Titan overshadows it.

Mumei is the main girl with Ikoma being the main guy

Both end up working together to defend against the Kabani, a type of monster. And there’s some romance along the way.

If you’re looking for a differen thorror series, try this one.

23. Quintessential Quintuplets

Quintessential Quintuplets has been an anime in the limelight for sometime now. It’s a romance/harem that performs better than many harem can claim.

With 5 twins and a male main character who’s their teacher, it’s surprising how memorable they all are.

Generally speaking.

There’s 2 seasons so far.

Other anime worth mentioning:

  • Akame Ga Kill.
  • Asterisk War.
  • Eureka Seven.
  • K-On.
  • Boarding School Juliet.
  • Oregariu.
  • The Rising Of The Shield Hero.
  • Ishuzoku Reviewers.
  • Say I Love You.
  • Lovely Complex.
  • Maid Sama.
  • God Eater.
  • Full Metal Panic.
  • Clannad.
