Avatar of Theo J Ellis

This Rurouni Kenshin is the NEW 2023 version of the old-school classic that brings nostalgia to people’s hearts and memories.

The 2023 version has improved visuals, aesthetics, and frames compared to its older version.

The anime is about Kenshin Himura, who was once called The Man slayer for a time in history when he slayed many people during a war.

Now he tries to liv peacefully in ana attempt to redeem himself and even uses a reverse sword blade to prevent him from being able to kill anyone with his weapon.

Here’s a list of anime shows just like Rurouni Kenshin 2023!

1. Samurai Champloo

Samurai Champloo mugen and jin art

Samurai Champloo mixes a hip-hop style, especially with the music, with artistic battle scenes and fitting styles with samurai in slippers.

But it’s more than that.

Mugen is the male MC, along with Jin, the quiet but powerful Samurai. And lastly, Fuu, who ties the entire story together, and there would be no story without her involvement.

She’s searching for a samurai who smells of sunflowers, and Mugen + Jin help her along the way.

There are some unforgiving scenes in this anime that will make your heart drop.

2. Bleach

Bleach ichigo protagonist soul reaper

Powerful male anime characters with swords, PLUS female characters with swords, martial arts techniques, and more? Bleach has it all.

It’s similar to Rurouni Kenshin for its use of swords and the style of characters both series have with both genders.

Ichigo Kurosaki, the MC, wants to protect his friends. That’s it. No cliche Shounen goals like you tend to see in other Shounen anime.

Rukia Kuchiki, Ichigo’s close friend, has similar goals but is her own person. And is one of the greatest female characters of all time in ANY shounen series.

3. Bamboo Blade

Bamboo Blade art franchise

This anime is a lot more innocent than Bleach or Rurouni Kenshin, but it still fits the glove. The main characters are part of a group who work together to compete in sports tournaments to get stronger.

In general, they all train together in a dojo in school, led by a teacher who many people don’t respect too much.

Once Tamaki Kowazoe becomes part of the team, things start to change because of her strength and talent for such a young age. Motivating everyone else, including the captain, Kirino Chiba,  to train harder.

4. Guardian Of The Sacred Spirit

Guardian Of The Sacred Spirit balsa beautiful

The main female character is a bodyguard and one who’s not to be messed with. She’s a lone soldier, alone in the world, protecting others for profit and visiting old friends occasionally.

Balsa Yonsa is her name. After being given a big mission to protect Chakuro, the prince of a kingdom, her life changes in many ways. Especially as far as having someone close who she helps develop from a kid into an adult.

Their mother-son bond is a highlight and a source of the anime’s more emotional episodes, aside from the action scenes that show off more than just her skills.

5. Inuyasha

Inuyasha and kagome waifu husbando

Inuyasha is named after the MC called Inuyasha. He’s a half-demon, half-human. A dog demon in particular. Or, as others call him, “a half breed”>

His brother seems to hate his guts because he’s a mix of human and demon, making his brother extremely prejudiced and even racist in the anime.

This changes over time as things progress. Inuyasha meets Kagome after she falls into a well and ends up in the past era of Japan, where Inuyasha lives.

Both are forced to hunt down the sacred jewel to save the world from the most powerful demon called Naraku, who, if he gets his hands on the jewels, will rule over everything.

6. Trigun

Trigun vash the stampede art style

Trigun is from a time that matches Rurouni Kenshin as far as visuals, content, and vibes. The main character is similar to Kenshin Himura as he travels alone as well.

He fools around, is sarcastic, and plays dumb a lot of the time, but he has a dark past with his own dark secrets.

A woman, in particular, is the love of his life who plays a role in the anime’s plot and where certain things lead.

7. Demon Slayer

Demon Slayer tanjiro art style

Kimetsu No Yaiba (Demon Slayer) is the most hyped anime of all time, and that hype carried it to the top, making it the best-selling anime of all time.

While the quality is debatable, the popularity is not.

Tanjiro Kamado is a positive MC who’s so positive it can make a person sick. Or annoyed, at the least.

Tanjiro comes home one day and finds his family slaughtered by the work of a demon, and his only sister is turned into a demon who almost kills him.

He commits to protecting Nezuko after she’s given a muzzle) and finding a way to turn her into a human.

This bond between brother and sister, a sister who still retains some humanity, is what carries the entire story and makes it distinctive compared to other Shounne anime.

Even if it’s the main defining characteristic.

8. Yona Of The Dawn

Yona Of The Dawn franchise art cute

Yona Of The Dawn is a Shoujo, fantasy series with historical vibes as far as setting and scenery, just like many anime in this list.

Princess Yona has lived a privileged, entitled life, which changes forever after a man she grows up with ends up killing her father, which she witnesses.

After running away with HAK, her bodyguard, they find a way to live on the outside, forcing Yona, a once princess and naive girl, who becomes more mature, aware of the poverty outside her ex-kingdom and the real-world problems she was protected from.

The character development and surprising amount of comedy in this series are what make it worth watching.
