11 Of The Most Unique Female Anime Character Designs

In a world full of 1000’s of anime’s, character design is everything.

I mean, who wants to watch an anime series where every character looks identical and boring?

Each character needs to have something special about them. Something you notice the moment you glance at them.

Most people mention characters like Erza Scarlet, Revy Rebecca and so on. And while I agree their character designs are spot-on, it’s too typical.

And too cliche.

So here’s my list of 11 unique female character designs.

From both old school and modern anime shows.

1. Umiko Ahagon

Umiko is a support character from 2016 anime: New Game! 

She’s the chief of programming in the gaming company: Eagle Jump.

What I love about her design is first off her skin tone. There aren’t many characters with this skin tone.

And also it helps her stand out among the other New Game characters.

Also her dress-style and facial expressions are nice and simple for me. As opposed to the usual big-eyed characters with fancy facial features or an over-the-top physique.

2. Canaan

From the anime with the same name: Canaan!

Another dark-skinned anime girl with a simple-ish design.

Her strange white-ish hair color matches her pants. With a red top that stands out.

Her eye color is grey-ish white. And overall there’s nothing typical or cliche about Canaan’s character design.

Which tells me they put a lot of thought into it. I like that.

3. Hikaru Shidou

From the anime series: Magic Knight Rayearth.

Hikaru Shidou’s signature color is red. With red hair, matching her red sword and a red magic knight outfit.

And of course – red eyes and a slim body.I like how well put together Hikaru’s design is.

And again – it avoids looking like the average anime character you see these days.

4. Homura Akemi

Madoka Magica is a stand-out character with her own swag, flair and style.

Long black hair, a special magical girl outfit that’s far from an imitation. And an intense vibe that blends well with parts of Homura’s personality.

Homura, as well as other Madoka Magica characters like Kyoko are some of the most unique.

Especially as far as design goes.

5. Miriam Tachibana

One of the main-ish characters from anime: Alice To Zouroku.

Miriam Tachibana has short black hair with a slice of pink on the sides.

She has lazy eyes and a slim build with a shrine-like outfit and a blue coat.

Miriam Tachibana’s designs is one of my favorites among female characters.

6. Re-l Mayer

From the anime series: Ergo Proxy.

There’s not a single female anime character you’ll see who looks like Re-l Mayer. 

If you ask me her design is one of the most flawless I’ve ever seen in an anime character.

Her eyes aren’t goblin-like when compared to the average female anime design. They look pretty realistic.

With a tint of blue-eye shadow matched with her black hair and outfit.

I can’t praise the designers enough for Re-l’s style.

7. Hotaru Shidare

Taken from the comedy anime: Dagashi Kashi.

One of the most impressive parts of Hotaru Shidare’s design is her eyes and face.

Her eyes are piercing, almost like it’s looking right through you. Or you’re looking through it.

There’s something strange and interesting about Hotaru’s eyes for sure.

Despite the busty-design they’ve given Hotaru, she’s unique in her own right.

And can’t be compared to any modern day female character that I know of.

8. Neptune (Nep Nep)

Taken from the anime series: Hyperdimension Neptunia.

Neptune’s design is simple, cool, laid back and fun. All wrapped into one hilarious anime character.

The hoodied top. The two white-accessories in Neptune’s hair.

Her purple hair matching her outfit and eye color. And the large strings hanging Nep’s hoodie.

It’s safe to say you won’t find a copy-cat design of Neptune’s anywhere in the world of anime.

And that’s why she’s so unique in a crowd full of cliche’s.

9. Yuuki Konno

From the anime series: Sword Art Online season 2.

Yuuki Konno’s outfit matches her purple/lavender hair color.

And in a way her design has a historical feel to it. At least that’s what I see.

Overall I love Yuuki Konno’s character design and think it’s one of the best I’ve seen.

10. Julis Alexia Van Riessfeld

Taken from the fantasy series: Asterisk War.

Julis is a princess who knows how to dress quite well. Though there’s not much variation to what she wears.

Having Pink hair gives off a unique vibe for Julis, especially when blended with her personality and attire in the anime series.

She’s one of my favorite female character designs.

11. Soi Fon

From the mega-famous anime: Bleach.

Soi Fon’s blue hair appears short at first. Until you realize the rest of it is tied into two braids in white cloth.

Soi Fon’s eyes are gray, and I would be willing to bet her design is based on a Chinese character.

Another one of my favorite unique female designs in anime. And she stands out with little effort among so many 100’s of female characters.
