32+ Famous (And Not So Famous) Military Anime Characters You’ll Ever Come Across

Military anime characters are fictional characters that appear in anime series that revolve around warfare, military operations, and combat.

These characters are often highly skilled fighters, strategists, and leaders, possessing exceptional physical and mental capabilities and often driven by a sense of duty and loyalty to their country, comrades, or mission.

Military anime characters can come from various backgrounds and settings, from the futuristic worlds of sci-fi anime to the historical battlefields of war dramas.

They may be members of a fictional military organization or based on real-world military branches, such as the army, navy, or air force, or let it be a terrorist. (Bonus points if they’re on the right side)

Some characters may also have supernatural abilities, like super strength or the power to manipulate elements, making them even more formidable on the battlefield.

Here’s a list of relevant characters.

1.) Levi Ackerman (Attack on Titan)

Speaking of total monsters who also happen to have positions of authority,

The most well-known example of this archetype is arguably Levi. Everyone seems to think of his unflinching and menacing demeanour whenever a new season premieres.

He truly deserves the reputation of being the strongest soldier in humanity. He has defeated numerous Titans by himself and even trained assassins, as we have witnessed.

Levi is very blunt in his approach to life and will give you the boot if you start making up excuses or appealing to his sensitive side.

2.) Suzaku Kururugi (Code Geass)

Before the Britannian invasion of Japan, Lelouch claims that Suzaku Kururugi was somewhat egotistical and infrequently put others before himself. When he first met Lelouch, he also exhibited brattish behaviour by hitting and intimidating him.

He believed Zero to be a wicked, immoral person who just cared about the outcome and had no regard for the lives of the innocent. Even though Zero had him under gunpoint, Suzaku declined his invitation to join him twice.

Later, Suzaku would pay tribute to Euphemia by continuing his quest to transform himself and evolving into the Knight Of One. This would allow him to rule Area 11 independently and respect Euphemia’s memory.

3.) Guren Ichinose (Owari no Seraph)

Guren fits the mould of the character you can’t help but like.

No one ever seems as bored as he does when a meeting is called or a new strategy needs to be outlined, although he is a commander.

When his subordinates don’t listen, he can also be pretty violent. Although we all know he adores them deeply.

But more significantly, he doesn’t hesitate to call Yuu out when he does something foolish. Just look at that smug expression.

4.) Edward Elric (Fullmetal Alchemist)

Edward Elric, is also one of the State Military‘s top alchemists.

Ed is more powerful than any other alchemist in the State Military since he can pass through the Gate and witness the Truth, which means he can do alchemy without forming a Transmutation Circle.

Instead of using the runes, he can generate energy with his own will, thanks to his talent.

He has incredible skill with his skills and can wield alchemy to its utmost extent in conflict. Sadly, he forfeits his gift at the end of the series to put Alphonse back in his body.

5.) Rei Hizuki (Sky Girls)

At the Oppama Testing Facility, Lieutenant Rei Hizuki is the officer in command of the Sonic Diver program.

Rei Hizuki is a reserved and covert person. Although Lt. Col. Togo is superior to him in rank, Lt. Hizuki is positioned above Togo in the program.

Rei is preparing the Sonic Divers to fight WORMs without the other characters’ knowledge. He presents as a cold man since he is arrogant and doesn’t want to express his emotions.

6.) Kain Fuery (Fullmetal Alchemist)

A close subordinate of Roy Mustang is Master Sergeant Kain Fuery. He has an excessively kind nature toward both people and animals. He was hired by Mustang because of his technological knowledge.

Since he can create secure communication channels and access others, he mainly assists Mustang with communication.

After the homunculi split apart Mustang’s group, he is moved to Southern Headquarters. In the manga, he finally deserts the army to assist Mustang in toppling King Bradley.

7.) Suzuha Amane (Steins; Gate)

The distance between Suzuha before and after the identity reveal is as wide as it gets. She first gives the impression of a cute, silly character who genuinely enjoys fixing bikes and hanging out with the group.

Then, however, we find out that she is an elite soldier from the future who can (and will) stomp your butt if you get in the way of her work. She is not only physically strong, but she also has firearms skills.

Additionally, she has proven brilliant, even lending a hand to her soon-to-be father with the time machine. You refer to it as the total package.

8.) Mikasa Ackerman (Attack on Titan)

Mikasa lived with Eren Yeager and his parents, Grisha and Carla before Wall Maria fell after Eren saved her after her parents were killed by human traffickers.

She is the last member of the Shogun clan to remain on Paradis Island, making her a member of the Azumabito clan and a powerful political figure in Hizuru.

Mikasa strongly loves Eren more than a family, except she doesn’t have the guts to admit it to him.

Her character is very brave and strong, both mentally and physically. Mikasa is the type of person that would make you kneel without her saying it.

9.) Cayenne Suzushiro (Aquarion Evol)

Cayenne Suzushiro is the older brother of Mikono Suzushiro. He is well-liked and well-known among the academy’s female students.

He uses his elemental power, Prophecy of Despair, which allows him to predict when calamity will strike those around him, to improve his shooting abilities.

He tries to keep his little sister safe because he sees her passing away and thinks Aquarion has something to do with it.

Since Amata is the one who takes Mikono Suzushiro closer to the Aquarion, he feels a little irritated with Amata Sora.

10.) Kurokawa Mari (Gate- Thus the JSDF Fought There!)

Kurokawa Mari is a Japanese Self-Defense Forces Sergeant First Class and a female Yoji Itami’s Third Recon Unit member.

She is the team’s medic and normally speaks quietly and restrainedly, although she has demonstrated the ability to use her sharp tongue when necessary.

After four years, she rises to the head nurse position at the JSDF Central Hospital.

Kurokawa has a composed and “ladylike” appearance, yet she has a temper and may strike out at anyone who irritates her. She also exhibits a mothering quality in that she appears to care greatly about the lives of the squad and innocent civilians.

11.) Saichi Sugimoto (Golden Kamuy)

I anticipated this man to be much meaner than he actually is.

He’s a large, strong man with more scars than you can count, whom I saw behind a pile of dead bodies.

But as soon as he exited the battleground, he totally relaxed. The clearest example is how he respects Asirpa, with whom they trade cultural items like cooking recipes and expertise. He always has the expression of a very curious exchange student.

Additionally, he gives up on murdering altogether, at least when he has control over it.

12.) Esdeath (Akame ga Kill!)

Esdeath was one of the Empire’s top generals. As a result of Night Raid’s success as an assassination team, she eventually took the Prime Minister’s position as the Jaegers’ commander. Tatsumi was the object of her intense love and obsession.

In her past, she once came back after a trip to see her tribe completely decimated, with everyone either dead or dying.

After a fatal injury, her father died away while she held him. She made a promise to herself to get stronger after that. She later enlisted in the Empire’s military and quickly rose. At some point, the Prime Minister permitted her to select a Teigu.

13.) Wentzel H. Ahbe (Black Lagoon)

Lieutenant Commander Wentzel H. Ahbe was both a renowned Battle of the Atlantic survivor and the captain of the German Type IXC U-boat U-234.

The U-234, its veteran crew, and two passengers were to be transported from the Kriegsmarine naval station in Kiel to apparently transport Lieutenant Colonel Matsuto back to Batavia.

This was Ahbe’s penultimate directive during the final months of World War II in Europe.

14.) Nagisa Aizawa (Jitsu wa Watashi wa)

The second child of the family of the alien General. She was brought to Earth to infiltrate and observe human behaviour and culture, particularly the Japanese way of life, to eventually bring about social integration between the two species.

Her peers labelled her the “Iron Lady” since she is known for always following rules set out by the military or the institution.

She nevertheless behaves like a typical high school student and is a nice girl.

15.) Alicia Melchiott (Valkyria Chronicles)

Alicia Melchiott, a nineteen-year-old woman who aspires to become a prosperous baker, joined the military after being entangled in the chaos of the Imperial invasion of Gallia. Alicia is upright and trustworthy. She enjoys being of service to others and gradually warms up to Welkin.

She has been given the rank of Sergeant and performs the duties of a Scout due to her prior expertise.

She is incredibly dependable, morally upright, and enjoys looking after others. Initially confused by Welkin’s nature, she quickly realizes what makes his soft methods unique.

16.) Tanya Degurechaff (The Saga of Tanya the Evil)

Despite what the title might imply, Tanya is not like the previous choice regarding friendliness.

She has a reputation for being ruthless since she will physically punish people who don’t follow her instructions. It only applies to her subordinates; her opponents suffer significantly worse outcomes.

Yet, she radiates badassery so much that I can’t help but shout along with her when she destroys another platoon.

She’s actually a former “he” who was killed and managed to enrage God to the point that he placed her on this brand-new, violent planet that fits her psychotic attitude.

17.) Misato Katsuragi (Evangelion)

Misato Katsuragi, who initially held the position of captain but eventually attained the rank of major, is the operations director at NERV. Misato’s initial position in Rebuild of Evangelion is a lieutenant colonel.

Her responsibilities at NERV include serving as the Eva pilots’ field commander, giving instructions, conveying war plans, and processing feedback from Ritsuko Akagi and the technicians watching the Evas.

She also manages a lot of NERV’s administrative tasks.

18.) Yuriko Star (The Irresponsible Captain Tylor)

Another by-the-book officer is Lt. Commander Yuriko Star. Yuriko joined the UPSF to give her life some structure and always tried to follow the regulations virtually.

Unlike Yamamoto, she doesn’t hesitate to chastise Tylor when he has acted inappropriately and will even slap him if necessary.

To minimize her gender, Yuriko portrays herself as a soldier first before a lady.

19.) Tadaomi Karasuma (Assassination Classroom)

Tadaomi is an agent for the Ministry of Defence, not an assassin, unlike every other significant character in the series.

His job is to watch over and direct the students as they murder Koro-sensei. But, because he is constantly serious, his emotional range is almost zero. Irina never registers as a threat, although she excels at driving men insane.

Yet, I suppose that mentality is what a proper agent should have, so excellent for him.

And let’s face it: nobody questions Irina’s taste in men, although he never smiles or displays emotion.

20.) Shinoa Hiragi (Seraph of the End)

Shinoa Hragi, Mahiru’s younger sister, comes from the famous and wealthy Hragi Family. She was designated Yichir Hyakuya’s supervisor during his suspension and collaborated with Guren Ichinose.

Shinoa is a Japanese Imperial Demon Army sergeant and the Shinoa Squad’s commander in the Moon Demon Company.

Shinoa’s demeanour is sarcastic and apathetic, and her remarks lack much feeling. She has a dry sense of humour and enjoys making fun of others.

21.) Awashima Seri (K- Project)

Seri Awashima, the Blue King Reisi Munakata’s lieutenant, is the second-in-command of Scepter 4. Seri is a very serious, majestic, composed, and cool-headed woman who wants to avoid conflict and negotiates as her preferred means of resolving issues.

Seri may be highly risky because she tends to have high expectations for herself and, most likely, her leadership qualities.

22.) Laura Bodewig (Infinite Stratos)

Laura isn’t yet a fully qualified soldier, in theory. She is a first-year student at the IS academy, so she is undoubtedly on the right track.

She has the necessary skills, and even her attitude is ideal for moving up the ranks, so I think she will be a monster once she graduates the academy. In anime history, this is the first time a heroine has ever kissed a boy in public after realizing she liked him.

She has a superiority complex, which is the one thing that scares me. Most notably, because she is German, not to generalize, but we saw how it turned out the last time.

23.) Motoko Kusanagi (Ghost in the Shell)

Cyborg squad leader Major Motoko Kusanagi served in the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force before being hired by Public Security Section 9, a fictional division of the genuine Japanese National Public Safety Commission.

She attained the rank of major while serving in the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force.

In the Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, the Major makes her first confirmed appearance in Kim’s manor when she enters the hallway portion of Kim’s looping fake memories.

She places herself, a basset hound, and clues to let Batou know that he and Togusa are the targets of a ghost-hack attempt.

24.) Graham Aker (Mobile Suit Gundam 00)

A 1st Lieutenant with the rank of Ace Pilot in the Union Army. Graham was initially assigned to the elite MSWAD squad.

Still, after seeing the first appearance of the Gundam Exia, he develops a fascination with the Gundams and is quickly reassigned to the Union’s anti-Gundam investigation taskforce.

His exceptional piloting abilities allow him to perform the “Graham Special” or change into his Union Flag mobile suit while in the air.

25.) Yōji Itami (Gate)

The anime military has never encountered a character as ordinary and amazing as this one.

Because of the dismal nature of his family life, he turns to anime and develops otaku tendencies.

To infect other soldiers with the otaku virus, he then manages to join the military despite barely passing all of his tests.

You could assume that, at this point, he is merely a joke figure and would be immediately discharged from the army, but nope!

He advances through the ranks using his cunning and ends up as the link between the natural and supernatural worlds.

26.) Smoker (One Piece)

Following the betrayal of his previous commander Vergo, Smoker the White Hunter is a Marine officer and the commander of the G-5 Marine Base.

He was initially presented as a captain in Loguetown, where he declared it his goal to catch Luffy. As a result of the events in Arabasta, he was later promoted to the rank of commodore.

He is one of Luffy’s frequent enemies. Smoker serves as the main adversary of the Loguetown arc and a minor antagonist during the Marineford arc due to his activities against Luffy at Loguetown.

27.) Crusch Karsten (Re: Zero- Starting Life in Another World)

Meckart Karsten and his late wife Helena have a daughter named Crusch Karsten.

Prince Of Lugunica, the fourth son of the King of Lugunica, was Crusch’s first companion while he was a young nobleman of Lugunica.

Karsten sided with a member of her political enemy Emilia’s camp soon after the three-year Royal Selection officially began.

The servant of Emilia in question, Subaru Natsuki, volunteered to aid Karsten in her mission to kill the White Whale in exchange for military assistance in purging Emilia’s domain of Witch Cultists.

28.) Griffith (Berserk)

Few mortals can accomplish the task of knowing Griffith. His charm stat is maxed out, but we can also tell from his introduction that he has plenty of room for mobility and swordsmanship.

Even the higher-ups who despised him couldn’t ignore his crafty tongue, piercing look, and fake charm since everyone in his crew was eager to put their lives in his hands. Because he was such a large man, each setback had devastating effects that crushed everyone below him.

29.) Viral (Gurren Lagann)

The commander of the Human Eradication Army’s Far East Theater is a beast man with shark and cat genes. He works with Adiane and Cytomander after General Thymilph dies to exact revenge on Kamina.

He is immediately subordinate to the General. Controls the armed guards assigned to Enki. He is Simon’s fiercest rival.

He deeply dislikes humanity, which lessens as the book goes on, and he calls people “Naked Apes.” He is arrogant and stubborn. An extremely strong sense of honour is Viral’s most distinctive quality.

30.) Dusty Attenborough (Legend of the Galactic Heroes)

Admiral Dusty Attenborough worked under Yang Wen-li in the Free Planets Alliance’s 13th Fleet before becoming a commander in the Iserlohn Republic. Attenborough, the youngest admiral in Military history, was close friends with Yang.

For most of the significant conflicts of that time, notably the Seventh Battle of Iserlohn, which resulted in the bloodless seizure of Iserlohn Fortress, Attenborough would continue to serve directly under Yang Wenli.

31.) Rudol von Stroheim (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure- Battle Tendencies)

This dude is an outright maniac in every sense of the word. I admire him for doing it.

I should probably restate that last sentence because he is a Nazi. There is no denying that Rudol is cruel. And for his experiments, he’ll enlist helpless passersby as test subjects.

He is, however, also immensely fearless and never backs down from a fight, even if it means decapitating or blowing himself up. He wasn’t entirely awful, though; ultimately, he greatly contributed to the Pillar Men’s defeat.

32.) Heinrich Lunge (Monster)

Given the scenarios he finds himself in, I don’t think it’s a leap to label him a soldier.

He is extremely thorough and air-types anything he considers important information to view things objectively. He is also incredibly tenacious and will hunt you down to the end if it helps him solve a case.

His approach may negatively impact his family life, but he has a fantastic character arc.
