Empathetic anime characters are some of the most likeable you can come across.
That’s because:
- They care for others.
- They have compassion.
- They’re more selfless.
- They put others first when it counts.
- They’re loyal, kind, and friendly.
- And they’re less judgmental.
For some people, this can be a weakness or a reason to dislike, but many will agree that empathetic people are genuine and that’s hard to find and is definitely appreciated.
Let’s focus on these types of anime characters in this post.
Here’s a list.
1. Azmaria Hendric (Chrono Crusade)
Azmaria might be the most empathetic character in anime that there has ever been.
She cares for others, puts them first, and thinks of other people’s well-being. But in her case, she was in an abusive situation that made it difficult to think only of herself.
Still, she remains somehow pure, kind, and compassionate in spite of her challenges and traumatic experiences.
She’s a friend for life and is one of the most loyal anime characters.
2. Ryou Fujibayashi (Clannad)
Ryou, also referred to as Rose in the dubbed version of Clannad is the sister of Kyou. The latter is more aggressive as a character and more straightforward as a person.
Ryou on the other hand is more soft, gentle, kind-spirited, and sometimes shoots herself in the foot to please others.
One thing about Ryou is she’s trustworthy and a genuine person.
3. Hitori Bocchi (Hitoribocchi)
Hitori is a girl with social anxiety issues and is a character who has entered a new school with no friends. Her goal is to make a lot of friends, as a promise made to one of her “good” friends who goes to a separate school.
Being an introvert and one with social anxiety, she struggles to communicate with others but always has the best intentions and a good heart.
Part of her personality flaws is used for comedic reasons, and it’s used well enough that it becomes relatable.
4. Momo Yaoyorozu (My Hero Academia)
Momo is often criticized by “the Twitter mob” for so-called fan service or her hero outfit, but for those who are genuine fans of MHA, you know Momo is a good character for more than one reason.
She has a good attitude, is open-minded, very creative which aligns with her ability, and of course, she has a caring heart.
Her being from a rich family destroys the typical stereotype of people coming from money having a bad attitude, etc.
5. Choji (Naruto Franchise)
Choji isn’t the most relevant anime character in Naruto later in the series, especially with Boruto, but in the first and second seasons, he was.
As a supporting character and a friend of Shikamaru, Choji’s moments in Naruto are somewhat wholesome with some exceptions.
He’s a caring person and ideally would rather not have to fight or especially murder someone else even if it means protecting something he cares for.
He’s just built differently.
6. Chloe (The Kingdoms Of Ruin)
Chloe from the anime Kingdom Of Ruin is an important figure in the story, and in a way, she can be compared to the female character Teresa of The Faint Smile from Claymore.
As a witch, she’s powerful and that’s an understatement. No one can mess with her when it comes to strength, and she can put many anime mages to shame.
She lives life on her own terms, and despite being chased down by humans wanting to kill her for being a witch and experiencing racism, she has enough empathy somehow to not lower herself to the abuse.
7. Ruby Hoshino (Oshi No Ko)
Ruby Hoshino is a lot like her mother Ai Hoshino, especially with aesthetics and energy, but Ruby is a lot more caring, empathetic, compassionate, and could never be the person her mother was in the Idol business.
Her energy is infectious, and that’s why she’s a relevant part of the story.
8. Charlotte Evans (I’m Giving The Disgraced Noble Lady I Rescued A Crash Course In Naughtiness)
Charlotte is a girl who was chased out of her kingdom and falsely accused of doing something she didn’t by her assigned “husband” who had other plans in mind.
She’s used to living life for other people, and even though she was part of a family with clout, she was the slave of the family made to clean, dust, and do everything for others without any concern for her wellbeing.
Similar to Miyo from the anime “My Happy Marriage”.
Despite the abuse she dealt with and her trauma, she still is caring and empathetic, which surprises Allen, the anime’s male MC.
9. Orihime Inoue (Bleach)
Orihime is a classic character for a lot of reasons. First off, Orihime is a ditzy, airheaded female character and the anime uses this as a source of comedy when it counts.
Second, Orihime is a kind, gentle, and sometimes unnecessarily forgiving character because of her empathetic nature.
Third, Orihime is strong as a person and has been through a lot. What’s surprising is how she moves forward and never seems to get stuck in the past or mope around.
10. Akira Tendou (Zom 100)
As a character who was once forced to go to work for a boss who shouts in his face and even traumatized him, Akira still keeps his energetic attitude and fun personality intact.
This is only because the world goes to shit and everyone becomes zombies, so he no longer has to work. So he makes a list of 100 things to do before becoming a zombie and starts to tick off his dreams and goals one by one.
He’s an empathetic character, but one who can easily be manipulated by those who appear more domineering because he lacks self esteem.
11. Miyo Saimori (My Happy Marriage)
Miyo is one of the more kind and genuine anime characters to come out of the year 2023. She has a tough upbringing and is treated like shit by her own family for political reasons.
She’s used as a scapegoat and made to suffer, unlike her bratty sister who’s given privileges.
This changes somewhat after she marries into a certain family, which ends up being her saving grace, and despite the way she was treated back home, she holds no grudges.
12. Uiharu Kazari (A Certain Scientific Railgun)
Uiharu is a character who is smart, a whiz kid, knows how to use computers and is good at ethical hacking.
In fact, it’s the major area where Uiharu stands out as far as skills and talents. Even adults rely on her.
At heart, she’s kind, compassionate, empathetic, and understanding of others’ feelings. But sometimes she can be naive and too understanding to the point of believing in someone despite there being evidence that they’re shady.
She’s idealistic and non-judgmental.
13. Krillin (Dragon Ball Z)
Krillin is sometimes forgotten about in the anime industry, especially when talking about DBZ in particular. But he’s a character with a big heart and is a man who won’t back down on his beliefs and doing what’s right.
He’s also a modest character who doesn’t brag, shout to the skies about how great he is, or anything of the sort. Not to say he doesn’t believe in himself, but he doesn’t scream about it.
14. Keitaro (Dark Gathering)
Keitaro is the anime’s MC along with Yayoi, the younger kid he mentors with schoolwork.
As someone with an affinity for spirits, ghosts, and things of that nature, he is always attracting this type of energy into his life. Similar to Ichigo in Bleach you could say, but different.
Keitaro has been cursed on his hand, along with Eiko, who he’s dating, and he eventually commits to ridding himself of the curse with the help of Yayoi to defeat evil spirits, especially the one who cursed him.
He has a kind heart and is a modest person.
15. Emilia (Re:Zero)
Emilia is the female MC of ReZero, and the one people complained and argued about during the first season because Subaru the MC chose her over a character called Rem.
As a half-elf, she’s judged and mistaken to be the Witch of Satella. Emilia’s magic is more powerful than she lets on, capable of freezing an entire forest with relative ease.
While she is naive in some ways, this is also her strength as she’s not one to judge or belittle others, and has an open mind in general.
16. Sumi Chan (Rent A Girlfriend)
Sumi Chan is an innocent anime character who could do no wrong. She is kind, but struggles with self confidence and is too shy for her own good.
With the help of Kazuya, she gains some confidence in herself as a rental girlfriend and as a person and becomes better at communication and social situations.
17. Marin Kitagawa (My Dress Up Darling)
Marin is an Otaku, flat out, but she isn’t the stereotype everybody thinks of either. She has no issue telling people to their faces about themselves if they cause problems or judge others she cares about.
While she’s straightforward, she’s also feminine, classy, cheerful, and an understanding person.
In short, Marin is waifu material.
18. Komura Kaede (The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses)
Komura is the male MC of this wholesome series. And one that will give you diabetes for sure.
He’s obsessed with Mie-San, a girl with glasses that she sometimes forgets when going to school. He helps her out, and this is the start of their relationship.
In general, Komura is a thoughtful type of person with everyone, and when push comes to shove, he’s capable of more than he thinks he is.
19. Pacifica Casull (Scrapped Princess)
Pacifica is the main female character of the show and the “scrapped princess” who everyone is hunting down in order to kill her.
As a baby she was thrown off a cliff to kill her because they claim a prophecy says she will destroy the world when she turns 16.
This anime has religious aspects, and so do some characters. Pacifica, in particular, is just a regular girl who’s caring, compassionate, but can have a feisty attitude when it counts.
She just wants to live a peaceful life, but that’s a lot to ask for in her situation.
20. Mutsuki (Kantai Colelction)
Mutsuki is the character that Fubuki starts talking to the moment she joins the dorm. Mutsuki helps Fubuki, and in turn, Fubuki helps and supports Mutsuki in every way she can.
Both characters motivate and push each other, and are each other’s source of happiness day to day. That’s the kind of friendship they build.
Mutsuki is like Uiharu from Railgun – empathetic and understanding.
21. Hinata Hyuga (Naruto)
Hinata has always been thoughtful of others despite her situation, life, and childhood upbringing. In the end, it works out for her as she finds a man who treats and respects her for it (Naruto).
With her unique set of eyes known for the Hyuga, and her growth as a character, it’s hard not to like Hinata if you avoid the whole “Sakura vs Hinata” argument in an extreme sense.
