Who is the best Fairy Tail character? And what about if you were to put it in a ranking order?
That’s what this post will set out to do.
For some anime fans, they may choose:
- Natsu Dragneel.
- Gray Fullbuster.
- Erza Scarlet.
- Lucy Hertfilia.
- Laxus Dreyar.
Or some other character.
But here is MY list of Fairy Tail characters. A tier list from top to bottom.
The most relevant characters will be mentioned.
Let’s get started.
1. Jellal Fernandes
Jellal Fernandes is one of Fairy Tail’s most underrated anime characters. He is a supporting character, but so relevant he may as well be paired up with the mains considering his importance in the story.
A villain who never signed up to be (he was under a spell) and someone who is deeply empathetic and sorry for his past actions, while moving forward to pave the way to a better him and a better future.
2. Lucy Heartfilia
Lucy Heartfilia, although a protagonist, is also underrated in her own way because of the way the fanbase incorrectly judges her role (or the Shonen fandom in general).
Like many Fairy Tal characters, she is empathetic but very compassionate, considerate, while still drawing a line and is the source of the anime’s comedy and wholesome moments.
Her story is too important and you simply can’t X-her out of it as the FT series would fall apart.
One of the best fairy tail characters.

3. Gray Fullbuster
Gray Fullbuster is relatable for those who are introverts, aren’t the most “mouthy”, and tend to be cool, calm and collected most of the time.
This fits Gray’s ice magic abilities but he’s also one of the most thoughtful and sensible characters in the series when a situation is tough or chaotic.
What would Fairy Tail be without one of its greatest characters of all time, and the comedic rival/brother of Natsu and Leon?
4. Natsu Dragneel
Natsu Dragneel is the star of the show and that is no question. He along with Lucy might be the most prominent characters out of the main ones but that’s debatable as well.
Still, Natsu is the face of the show and has so many iconic lines, sayings, behaviours, and ways of speaking that he’s unforgettable.
The main dragon slayer of FT and one of the best characters.
5. Mirajane Strauss
Mirajane Strauss is the cool headed female character of the show. She’s gentle, innocent, feminine, charming, and most of all, extremely kind. But she’s not the type of person you can take their kindness for weakness.
She has a darker side that when unleashed, most people ask for forgiveness for daring to f*ck with her in the first place.
Mirajane is also one of Fairy Tail’s most beautiful anime characters.
6. Laxus Dreyar
Laxus, the lighting dragon slayer is the son of Makarov the Fairy Tail guild leader. In the beginning he’s arrogant, cocky, thinks he’s the best thing since sliced bread and sees nobody as a challenge.
He even takes on Natsu and Erza in the early stages together and is a S-rank wizard.
His character development is one of the best the series has to offer, and his growth as a character puts him high on my tier list of Fairy Tail characters.
7. Ultear Milkovich
Ultear Milkovich is like Jellal in a lot of ways, and ironically the two characters are tied together since SHE is the one who controlled a young and impressionable Jellal through magic.
She has always been powerful and is one of the strongest mages in Fairy Tail, at least until the change of events that take place in the story.
She too is on a journey of self reflection, betterment, improvement, change, and doing better to fix the wrongs of her past.
8. Erza Scarlet
Erza Scarlet, queen of the fairies, is one of Fairy Tail’s most loved characters for a reason. She’s gorgeous, strong, moral, ethical, and has her own mind and mental fortitude.
She is a knight, and this is seen in her behaviour.
Her ability “requip” is also one of the most loved abilities in Fairy Tail because of its versatility.
9. Kagura Mikazuchi
Kagura Mikazuchi could even be placed above Erza in a tier list. She is like Erza for her sense of honour, pride, ethics, morals, mental fortitude, and sheer strength.
Not to mention her strong character traits.
If we’re talking about swordsmen in Fairy Tail specifically, Kagura is in a league of her own.
10. Wendy Marvell
Wendy Marvell is one of Fairy Tail’s underrated characters. She becomes part of the main FT team not long after she is introduced.
Her character development, similar to others like Laxus, is clear to see and the progress fundamentally changes her role in Fairy Tail as well as makes her more likeable across the baord.
Her sky dragon magic and healing magic have saved the day many times.
11. Levy Mcgarden
Levy Mcgarden is now the official partner of Gajeel Redfox. She has always been one of the smartest characters from Fairy Tail.
Many times she is the reason they survive, or why a strategy goes better, or anything in between. Plus her solid script magic makes her ability to fight in a battle unique considering she’s not physically as strong as others.
Personality wise, she is a shining example from Fairy Tail and one of the anime’s best.
12. Gajeel Redfox
Gajeel Redfox, or “black steel Gajeel” is one of the best dragon slayers of the franchise. He’s straightforward, powerful, direct, sometimes hard headed, and used to be a villain.
It was Levy Mcgarden who helped him see change as she was the only one who gave him a chance at redemption.
This shapes both his character and Levy who he has a baby with later on.
13. Minerva Orland
Minerva has a complicated past and life. She was pressured into doing heinous things by her father, and this led her to have insecurities and to be harsh on her guildmates to the point of force, violence, and even worse for her enemies.
She had no morals when it came to the pain of others because she justified it through her own trauma.
She changes a lot in the series and like others, her character development deserves a mention because it’s why she is one of the anime’s best characters.

14. Brandish
Brandish strikes you as a person who is nonchalant, easily bored at times, and someone who is actually more lenient than her reputation has you believe.
She has the power to shrink or enlarge anything she wants, even inside the body of another person or creature. She can even shrink an entire town down to the size of a rice grain.
She spends most of her time eating and seeking out treats, as well as trying to find out where Aquarius is (celestial spirit). Beforehand she was part of the Spriggan 12.

15. Irene Belserion
Irene is the mother of Erza, and her voice actor in the dub is spot on.
Considered the most powerful mage of all time in Fairy Tail along with the mage “August”, there is no spell she can’t cast with high speed and further beyond.
She is also a dragon, and as stunning as Erza Scarlet.
