Gateway anime shows of the WORST kind can’t always be avoided, and neither can gateway anime in general.
This is no different to other industries and spaces of:
- Entertainment.
- Films.
- Games.
And similar.
After all, new fans discover anime and start watching it usually based on:
- Gateway anime shows.
- And shows known for bringing in a lot of new fans.
Regardless of the quality and whether it’s a good introduction or not.
Let’s talk about the types of shows that fit the dollar bill.
Worst gateway anime for new fans:
1. Isekai Quartet
Isekai Quartet is a mashup of many Isekai series wrapped into one show.
You have characters from:
- Overlord
- Konosuba
- Re:Zero
- Shield Hero
And many more anime or characters.
Most who try to get into this series without understanding anything won’t know what the F is going on and will be confused by the jokes, the humour, the comedy, and the dialogue.
So it’s not the best anime to get into for someone new to the industry.
2. School Days
School Days is an anime series that will always be remembered in the anime industry for a number of reasons. But the most potent one is the content, the violence, the savagery, and how bad the anime is in general.
It’s rated as one of the worst anime of all time for a reason. And someone getting into anime and watching this for the first time might get the wrong impression of WHAT romance anime is like.
School Days is a massive exception to the rule, and a special type of romance/school series unlike any other, for better or for worse.
It does highlight some realistic elements of romance though, as far as the more negative side to romance, people, toxicity, and so on.
3. Gintama
Gintama is a staple in the anime community. It’s the DBZ of comedy. It’s a long comedy series, has 100s of episodes, and more importantly, it has too many references for new fans to understand.
The anime’s speciality as a comedy/parody is the fact it references so many other anime and pieces of content, puts its own spin on it, mocks and makes fun of many anime tropes, cliches, and more.
It might be a bit much for a new anime fan to wrap their head around since the dose is stronger than other, comparable anime like My Bride Is A Mermaid for example.
4. Naruto
I didn’t watch Naruto for a long time for a lot of reasons. One of them being the series is long as F and I didn’t wanna spend so much time and energy focusing on one series for so long.
This is a double-edged sword for an anime.
On one hand, Naruto has welcomed new anime fans and made them hardcore devotees of anime as a whole, and even going on to buy merchandise, support the industry, and so on.
But on the other hand, Naruti’s length as a franchise has deterred so many new fans from NOT wanting to watch it completely. Many have given up midway or even less than that actually.
Personally, I don’t recommend it for new fans as a gateway series.
5. Goblin Slayer
Goblin Slayer isn’t even that bad when you really think about it and deep it. It’s a series with an extremely violent and brutally savage first episode, which is what the anime is known and referenced for.
For many, especially those who are more dramatic and drama queens, Goblin Slayer’s first episode is enough to deter and scare off many new anime fans as a gateway anime series.
It’s uncomfortable, daring, and a small window into what you can expect from the brutal world of Goblin Slayer, goblins, and the monsters that lurk in caves.
But for those who get past that as new fans, you’ll realize the majority of Goblin Slayer is a lot less savage than the first episode, and it may hook you into the anime industry as a gateway series.
It’s a double-edged sword once again.
6. One Piece
One Piece is obviously on this list because of how f*cking long the series is and has gotten, and will get.
At the moment it’s well over 1000+ episodes and most will never dare to get into this gateway anime series because of its length, and the amount of information you’ll have to soak up.
I’ve watched the anime up until episode 30 or so, and I don’t know when I’ll get back into it. And I say that as a seasoned anime fan.
Now imagine what that will look like for those who are new fans, new to the industry, and looking to get into anime. One Piece is an awful idea and will only work if they’re genuinely in love with it.
7. Boku No Pico
Not exactly an anime series, in fact, it’s a hentai and a nasty one most should avoid like Tinder.
But it’s a Hentai series that many people TRICK new fans into watching, which is why it’s on this list for the worst kind of gateway anime.
Avoid being fooled into watching this and you’ll be good, and you may never watch anime again if you do.
8. High School DxD
High School DxD is famous in the ecchi community. It’s one of the kings of Ecchi and is loved by so many fans on the internet that its influence can’t be escaped.
This isn’t about what makes it special, but that it’s not the best kind of gateway anime series to get into. Because if you don’t understand context and nuance when it comes to these shows, you’ll likely be turned away from anime in general.
DxD is the case in point.
9. Keijo
Keijo is another popular ecchi series for different reasons. The anime focuses on:
- Sports.
- Except the sports are “butt” sports.
Female characters use the power of their asses and big booty to play sports and beat each other in competitions while dressing for the occasion.
This may be a good laugh and that could work for new fans, but many won’t know what the F they’re getting into.
10. Redo Of Healer
The new king of taboo anime is here. Redo Of Healer became one of the most shocking anime to have ever been adapted into the industry, and all streaming services ducked and dodged it like it was diseased.
It was only played on pirate websites, where it racked up millions of views, surpassing even many mainstream anime.
With a premise that sees an innocent main male character defiled, r*ped, abused, tortured, drugged, and mainu[ulated, only to later find a way to get revenge in some of the same ways himself, this anime’s moral compass will test people to the core.
11. Monogatari
Monogatari is an anime series that focuses on ONE thing more than most: dialogue. The anime spends a lot of time talking, dialogue’in, having conversations, showcasing hidden messages, and so much more.
I can’t imagine any new fan being able to put up with this for long unless they’re deep thinkers who live for curiosity.
The anime is different and unique in other ways, making it one of the worst kinds of gateway anime despite it being a “good” but weird series.
12. Detective Conan
Detective Conan is a famous and ongoing anime series with so many episodes (more than One Piece) that you might throw up at the thought of ever starting to watch it.
With this amount of episodes and a plot that isn’t the most exciting compared to your average Shounen that stimulates the brain, most new fans ar best avoiding this until later on if they decide it’s worth trying.
13. Miru Tights
Miru Tights is a horny anime series and one of the horniest you’ll ever witness. It’s also a weird series in league with shows like Kiss X Sis.
The anime’s premise is about girls who wear tights. Attractive, hot, sexy female characters who wear tights that is.
The anime has the camera angles, focus (no pun intended), imagery, and so-called plot to drive home these points.
New fans might be turned off forever if they watch this as a gateway anime.
14. Ishuzoku Reviewers
And then there are the infamous Ishuzoku Reviewers. Am anime that followed up Redo Of Healer’s madness and shocked the world with its adaptation, despite the content.
Male characters go around visiting brothels filled with different types of monster girls, some of which are elves, lizards, slimes, Loli’s, and the list goes on.
They have sex with these many monster girls and then leave their reviews of the places they visit to encourage more business, and to describe their experiences as adventurers travelling and having sex.
This type of anime will put many people off as first time watchers of anime.
