Urusei Yatsura (2022) is a reboot of an old-school anime series from the 90’s era of anime. All the same aspects have crossed over but in a now more gorgeous, eye-candy style of animation.
The anime is about Lum, an alien girl who can fly and even generate electricity like Mikoto Misaka.
Her father planned on conquering earth after landing in a massive spaceship, and uses Lum to compete with Ataru, the main male character in a game of tag.
Ataru wins and the two mistakenly end up in a relationship because of Lum’s misunderstanding of Ataru’s intentions.
The anime’s gag, comedy, humor, and certain set of moments are built around this.
Here’s a list of anime shows like Urusei Yatsura 2022.
1. Full Metal Panic Fumoffu
I don’t talk about this anime too often but the comedy is legendary and over the top just like Urusei Yatsura in a lot of ways.
Full Metal Panic is originally a military/mecha series where Sousuke Sagara protects a girl from terrorist threats. He works in an anti-terrorist organisation.
In FUMOFFU the anime takes a comedic approach and turns the whole seriousness of the show upside down, making it more P.G but hilarious for fans of comedy.
It’s even funnier if you watch FMP seasons 1 and 2 because of context but newcomers can still appreciate the anime and get an understanding of it fast enough through FUMOFFU alone.
2. School Rumble
A legendary classic anime in its own right as far as rom com go. Released in the early 2000s and one of the main influences of comedy tropes we see today, School Rumble is a bundle of things.
You have Kenji Harima who’s an ex-delinquent who changes his ways when he falls in love with Tenma.
You have Tenma, an airheaded girl who’s interested in someone else but is too dense to know Harima likes her.
There’s Miko, the mature girl who’s sensible and practices martial arts but is fairly popular and respected. And there’s Eri, the stuck-up rich girl who puts on a front and is used to rejecting guys on a weekly basis.
There’s a lot going on but the comedic style and writing makes everything so much better and fresher than even modern anime, while still having moments that hit deep.

3. Ranma 1/2
An anime with a very similar art style when compared to the original Urusei Yatsura but is also similar in nature.
Made by the same author as Inuyasha, Ranma 1/2 is an early 90’s anime and one of the original slice of life shows that featured cross-dressing characters.
Ranma falls into a Chinese Hotspring and finds out it has an effect on him. Any time water is splashed on him he turns into a female version of himself with red hair.
He eventually plays on this and uses it to his advantage. Ranma is also a martial artist just like Akane, a girl he argues to death with and is the main romantic interest of the series.
4. Engaged To The Unidentified
This is a rom com series with strange, almost alien elements similar to Urusei Yatsura. The main character is a normal girl called Kobeni who’s 16 years old.
She has an older sister called Benio who has a sister complex and is a bit obsessive and over the top.
A boy named Hakuya moves into their home at random with a younger sister, and Hakuya is set to marry Kobeni for unknown reasons which are forced upon her out of the blue (but rejects it).
As she gets to know Hakuya she starts to like him and the mysterious plot points start to reveal more and more about Hakuya, Kobeni, and spoilers not worth sharing here.
Wholesome series that goes unnoticed.

5. Sket Dance
You have 3 main characters:
- Hime Onizuka.
- Switch.
- Yusuke Fujisaki.
All 3 make up the Sket Dance, a team dedicated to helping others solve problems no matter how big or small. Sket Dance is like an inspirational (but still comical) version of Gintama.
The anime shares all 3 characters’ backstories, which are tragic and meaningful in their own right, and it adds weight to their characters and in a way, their comedic but legit chemistry with each other.
The anime is a parody so expect a lot of references.
6. To Love Ru
When an alien girl comes into the life of the main character, he has no idea how to handle it or take it. And before his eyes, a harem starts forming without much effort at all.
Compared to Urusei Yatsura you could say To Love Ru is more cliche and has less depth or purpose to it, but it’s contextually close as far as comparisons go (the themes of both anime).
It’s one of the most known Ecchi shows out there that doesn’t shy away from blatant fanservice.
7. Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid
Meeting a dragon on your way home and knocking back a pint or two isn’t exactly something that happens unless your high out your face. But that’s what happens when Kobayashi meets the dragon Tohru.
She lets the dragon stay at her home (in human form) and she becomes her maid, hence the title of the anime.
Kobayashi then gets to meet Tohru’s dragon friends, one of which is a younger dragon called Kanna Kamui. And she ends up living with them and becoming a family of sorts.
Tohru is jealous and doesn’t like Kobayashi giving attention to others, but it’s not to the extreme or the context you get from Urusei Yatsura.
It’s a different kind of vibe altogether, with action scenes also.
8. My Bride Is A Mermaid
The main character Nagasumi Michishio almost drowns in the ocean and is miraculously saved by a mermaid girl who comes to his rescue.
Because she saved his life and he saw her mermaid form, mermaid law dictates you have to either kill the person who witnessed it or marry them to avoid it.
Sun Seto the mermaid marries Nagasumi and seals the deal. Her Yakuza gang member family isn’t happy, particularly the father, and he consistently tries to kill and make Nagasumi’s life hell on earth.
This is a running gag as well as Sun Seto’s mermaid powers, their wholesome but problematic relationship, and the challenges they face along the way.
9. The Devil Is A Part Timer
Satan leaves his realm in fear of being killed by Hero Emelia, so he escapes to earth and is then forced to live like a human being after losing most of his powers.
He’s with his subordinate and the two work and lives together in a small flat in Tokyo.
Hero Emelia tracks down Satan and threatens to kill him. He’s responsible for the deaths of her family, friends, and others, but is forced to tone down her bloodlust now that she’s in a new world with a different set of rules.
The anime mixes comedy, serious aspects, romance, conflict between angels and devils, and does a stellar job in the first season more than the 2nd season.
