How often do you see people online complaining about anime fan service or fan service of certain characters?

Usually, it’s because of:

Or in the case of feminist outlets (or Twitter), because it’s offensive, sexist, and every other buzzword you can picture.

But anime fan service is there for a reason.

1. Darkness Lalatina (Konosuba)

It can’t be avoided. Darkness Lalatina is the female character of Konosuba who though she appears to be a knight who’s holy and righteous, she’s a masochist.

These masochistic tendencies lead to plenty of fan service in the Konosuba series. And seeing as the anime is also a parody of some of the more extreme versions of comedy, it’s not a surprise.

To be fair though, everyone gets their share on some level.

2. Rias Gremory (High School DxD)

Rias Gremory will forever be a red-headed female demon girl who fans love. She’s the main girl of the series and the one the main character essentially pays the most attention to.

Yes, this series is a harem and it’s an Ecchi. That means fan service characters are plentiful, and tiddies are par for the course. So High School DxD being an anime with some of the best fan service characters is only natural.

3. Marin Kitagawa (My Dress Up Darling)

Marin Kitagawa became a slightly controversial female character during the time the anime aired back in 2022.

Bulma in the first season of Dragon Ball is different compared to the classy, stunning Bulma we know in today’s version of DB (2023 and beyond).

Dragon Ball’s first season was wild for many reasons, but the fan service in the original is unlike anything you’ll ever see in further seasons and movies of Dragon Ball Z and beyond.

 

7. Lucy Heartfilia (Fairy Tail)

Lucy Heartfilia is a lot like Marin Kitagawa. Many people who look only at the surface will assume she’s just a fan service anime character.

But in reality, Lucy is a well-written character who offers depth, story, meaning, purpose, and so much more to the Fairy Tail series.

Without Lucy, there is no Fairy Tail. A lot of the story and the characters are indirectly or directly connected to her, similar to other characters like Erza or Mirajane (who also have their fan service moments).

As the main villain in the series and the leader of the Jaegers, Esdeath is a savage and one of the most dangerously strong female characters there is.

Ice powers like no other, military experience, hunting experience from childhood, and a messed up life make her the perfect fit for battle and the instincts that make her sharp.

Ryuko wants revenge against the academy and whoever she believes is responsible for killing her father. With what her father left behind, a pair of scissor blades, she goes on to wield this weapon to fight her way to the truth.

She takes losses, is badly beaten, but escapes, recovers, and eventually finds out the truth in the most unexpected, plot twist way possible.

The anime’s use of fan service, even in serious situations, is what makes this anime different. And it doesn’t even feel tacky either.

 

13. C.C (Code Geass)

C.C. from Code Geass is one of the green-haired anime beauties in the industry. The one who gives Lelouch his powers in the first place.

She likes eating Pizza, stuffing her face, and chilling, comes across as innocent, but definitely has a more sinister side to her character.

And she’s one of the characters with moments of fan service that fans won’t forget.

 

14. Mitsuri Kanroji (Demon Slayer)

Mitsuri Kanroji is the star of the show in the Swordsmith Village arc of Demon Slayer. Or she’s one of them.

Her unusual blade, how she wields this sword, her pink hair, outfit, airheaded personality and innocence all play into her likeability as a character.

Plus she’s a prime target for fan service either in fan art or the anime moments that have been put into memes.

 

15. Elinalise Dragonroad (Mushoku Tensei)

This woman from Mushoku Tensei has no shame whatsoever. She’s a shameless woman who will sleep around with men and get her fill of joy, satisfaction, pleasure, and sex.

As an elf, it means she has a long lifespan, and being a woman who’s attractive only makes her desires and shamelessness even more irresistible to the wrong people.

 

16. Makima (Chainsaw Man)

Makima may only wear a suit and tie, but she allows Denji to have his way with her in various aspects. You see this in the scene in Makima’s office where Denji is finding for a piece of Makima.

17. Ruka Sarashina (Rent  A Girlfriend)

Ruka is the girl obsessed with Kazuma. She fancies him and is shameless about it. She doesn’t hold back, restrict herself, play the Tusndere role, or act as if her feelings aren’t genuine.

She’s been the most honest girl from the beginning of the Rent A Girlfriend series.

She’s also one of the girls the anime uses fan service for, besides Chizuru, and this is even true when looking at material posted on the official Rent A Girlfriend social media accounts.

 

18. Hana Uzaki (Uzaki Chan Wants To Hang Out)

Hana is the main female character and the reason there was controversy back in December 2019.

The manga stirred controversy because of Uzaki and her figure. That was followed up with the blood donation campaign which feminists tried shutting down because it featured Hana Uzaki, and was “too sexy” (paraphrasing).

Then the anime was adapted as a result of that controversy in 2020 and the controversy continued with it.

All that to say, fan service is the culprit, as is being a fan service character, but it’s not surprising for an Ecchi show.

 

19. Ilulu (Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid)

Ilulu from Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid is another source of controversy yet again. To the point that Twitter claimed the animators of the series are p*dos.

Being a younger dragon, and one who’s smaller but has big oppai like Hana Uzaki, she was criticised by those who look at women and somehow manage to see children and judge them as such.

Ilulu is a fan service character who aimed to please and did exactly that regardless of the backlash.

 

20. Rangiku Matsumoto (Bleach)

This might be more the original Bleach than the new and improved version, but Rangoku was clearly a fan service character designed to please the audience.

She wore her shirt half open when in Ichigo’s school, and with her figure, that was obvious bait.

She teases Ichigo with supposed attempts to seduce him, but only to get a reaction out of him. Still, this all plays on her aesthetics, comedy, and fan service altogether.

Rangiku is genuinely a decent Bleach character regardless.

 

21. Maron (Dragon Ball Z)

Maron from DBZ was Krillin’s girlfriend at one time. Eventually, they broke up, and ironically, Krillin later names his daughter Maron after marrying and having a kid with Android 18.

The original Maron was bouncy, fun, energetic, airheaded, and the dream girl for Krillin (so he thought). And the fan service surrounding her character was too obvious.

 

22. Nozomi Kaminashi (Keijo)

Nozomi from Keijo, like many other Keijo characters, is designed to please and uses comedy to make the whole thing into some sort of joke.

Her tiddies, her figure, physique, the clothing she and others wear, and the camera angles involving Nozomi are shamelessly about fan service and not much else.

 

23. Isuzu Sento (Amagi Brilliant Park)

Isuzu is the girl who initially forces Kanie, the male MC, to do as he’s told. He’s forced and chosen as a candidate to save a magical theme park business that may go bankrupt soon.

Comedy aside, he makes changes, and with those changes comes a lot of fun, light-hearted episodes. And of course – fan service from Isuzu Sento and other female characters.

When the anime doesn’t focus on fan service, it’s all business and a serious persona from Isuzu.

 

21. Tamaki Kotatsu (Fire Force)

Tamaki from Fire Force is the type of character who is boxed into the fanservice routine. This doesn’t change until season 2, where Tamaki gets some welcome character development and relevance.

And even gets some action as far as getting stronger and training.

Aside from this, she was clearly created as a fan service character aimed to please.
