Hentai censorship has been ongoing since Hentai’s early beginnings.
Naturally, TV Shows, programs, and media platforms aren’t gonna air this type of content (maybe late at night)| but in general,not at all.
This censorship followed the internet with hentai and most platforms DON’T air it or won’t dare. Plus social media and sometimes the UN play an attempted role in censoring hentai content since it’s explicit in nature.
But none of this censorship has ever worked in the truest sense
You still have hentai, year by year, rising in popularity and even becoming the #1 most searched term on websites like pornhub. The biggest porn site on the internet.
And trends like AHEGAO, and many other trends continue to accelerate hentai’s growth.
Let’s talk about why hentai censorship has failed to work as intended.

1. It’s too popular for its own good
Popularity breeds power. Hentai has become so famous that if you make a comparison on Google Trends, it’s bigger than all of the most famous celebrities combined.
It’s more popular than Michael Jackson, Tate, the biggest TV shows and much more.
Piracy has played a massive role in this of course, but not in the same way as regular anime shows since there aren’t too many official hentai streaming sites to begin with.

2. Hentai’s dominance is unbeatable

In fact it’s #1 even higher than terms like:
- Japanese.

- BBC.
And other terms associated with porn that are mega-famous.
Hentai’s only issue is the fact it is hard to monetize because of censorship online and offline, and it’s hard because it takes creativity to monetize it in a meaningful way (like with digital games in the case of Nutaku).
The market is ripe for results and changes.
3. You can’t hide what people have been exposed to

This applies mostly to countries on a campaign to censor anime and hentai, or those who have already censored hentai (unsuccessfully).

You can’t hide what people are aware of. Once you get a taste of something, nothing will stop you from having it even if you do it in silence or in this case, with a VPN, etc.
The same is true in countries like Indonesia, Middle Eastern countries, Turkey, African countries, and Asian countries.

Many of these places (and their people) seek out hentai despite the fact porn, in general, is either illegal, banned, censored, punished, or heavily blocked by the government.
4. People will always find a way to access what they’re denied
Following up on the last point, once a person has been denied something they enjoy, they will find a way to continue enjoying it.
An example of this is the piracy industry when it comes to anime.
Look what the anime industry now has to deal with and has dealt with for years with piracy. Pirate sites get 100s of millions of views per month, and fans use those sites for a reason.
It’s because legal sites deny them access in various countries around the world, so the only way to watch anime is through pirate sites. A fact that entitled Westerners (Americans) can’t wrap their heads around.
This was still the case in 2024, and will continue to happen in 2025, 2026, and beyond.
5. Censorship only makes a product more successful (like hentai)
Russia apparently knows this.
In Russia, the government made a statement showing how aware they are of outright banning certain types of content because it will only make that content more popular than necessary.
This is the effect of outright banning or hard censorship. You only drive up the demand because as usual, people want things they can’t have and it makes the things they can’t have more valuable.
You could say it’s the inner reble in a lot of people that drives them to do this but either way, censorship drives demand. Hentai is th best example of this in action.
It has only gotten more popular over the decades despite all the censorship that’s happened for so long (in Japan and outside of Japan especially).

6. The medium continues to grow in popularity
Following up from the last point, the medium of hentai continues to grow, dominate, expand, and reach even more people around the world.
With more and more of the world being connected to the internet, you can also guarantee that more of them will be exposed to hentai (not all) and that will also drive up the demand yet again.
Other things like Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), Artificial Intelligence (A.I), and other technological advances will also find their way into hentai and drive even more demand.
Hentai, like anime, being fictional means the world we live in will only keep assisting its growth. Censorship can’t stop it, it will only encourage it.
