Why Anime Loli’s Are So Controversial

Why Anime Lolis Are So Controversial

Loli definition:

Little girl.

Expanded definition:

A girl in anime who looks younger than she is, or fits a certain stereotype.

From the outside looking in, lolis appear to be:

  • A type of anime character people fetishise.
  • A sexualized anime girl.
  • A girl who is older than she looks (400 years old, looks like a teenager).

Or it can be seen as something associated with hentai.

On the other hand, within the anime community, Loli’s:

  • They are treated as they are: cute anime girls.
  • Anime girls who are often younger sisters, siblings, or have an air of innocence matching their age.
  • Gag characters who are 40 years old but look 18.
  • Smol anime girls who add to the anime’s comedy.

So what’s the truth when you get down to it?

Why are anime lolis so controversial?

Let’s talk about the facts.

1. Anime lolis are, in fact, sexualized by artists who draw “fan art”

patheticXanimeXmeme

The fact of the matter is, fan art is rampant in the anime community, and often, a lot of it isn’t even an issue.

For example, fan art of:

  • DBZ.
  • Goku.
  • Vegeta.
  • Bulma.
  • Demon Slayer.
  • JJK.
  • Frieren.

And so on.

It’s innocent and usually a way of “giving props” to a favourite character or series.

But there is a clear dark side to anime fan art and lolis.

My Hero Academia might be one of the most famous examples of this nasty shit in action.

The anime prior to seasons 6 and 7 was rife for fan art of:

  • Main characters doing gay shit in a lewd fashion (teenagers if you wanna use that argument).
  • And even some of the CHILD characters doing sexual shit depicted in fan art.

Eri, an innocent white haired anime kid from MHA, hit the scene in season 4, and captivated the audience for clear reasons.

She is a victim and is eventually saved by Deku, the MC, from the clutches of the villain Overhaul.

Those who make fan art depict her with Overhaul doing weird, suspect shit and drawing both characters in ways that are questionable, considering not just the context, but the intent.

It’s surprisingly undisclosed and not talked about, or never was, except in exceptional cases (that one Twitter post that went viral highlighting it, etc).

By definition, ERI is a Loli and gives the entire genre, if you wanna call it that, a bad name beyond reason.

As sick as it makes me, this is an example of why “anime lolis” are controversial when you have deviant art artists making this type of nasty shit.

We even see the same with originally drawn anime fan art that depicts unrealistically short anime girls who appear to be “thicc” and sexually attractive, then fan art enjoyers defend it by saying, “IT’S NOT REAL”.

As if that statement somehow washes away the nasty intentions and fantasies that are clearly being displayed.

So when you hear people calling out or highlighting the so-called controversy of anime lolis, the fanart community happens to be a REAL concern in the anime community that many just pretend doesn’t exist.

Or worst of all, they make every excuse in the book to justify it, to such an extreme that they don’t hear themselves confessing.

2. They’re children after all

I mean, think about it.

The world over, no matter where you decide to look, travel, observe, or read about, has ONE thing in common.

That ONE thing is the protection of children being a top priority.

Children are innocent, most of all, and this translates to:

  • Media.
  • Films.
  • TV Shows.
  • Anime.

And everything in between.

Anime just happens to be a punching bag in general for:

  • Misinformation.
  • Misleading criticisms.
  • Out of context judgments.
  • Scapegoating comments.

anime pedophile claims goboiano

This was shown years ago when the BBC claimed the anime Girls Und Panzer is some sort of “pedo” anime series made for weirdos and creeps.

This, in spite of the fact that the anime is actually innocent, wholesome, silly, and just an average anime series with “cute girls doing cute things” in a non-harmful fashion.

Something similar happened in 2020 when the anime Uzaki Chan was announced for an anime adaptation. And when it finally came around, you can only imagine the double standards that were at play.

Some of the outrage is still unbelievable in hindsight, but it did in fact happen.

Hana Uzaki (character) was criticized for being a sexualized loli, which was predictably irrational.

After all, she’s an adult woman in college who’s short and has big oppai, a thing women in real life relate to because her aesthetics are in fact realistic.

Kaho Shibuya famously aired her thoughts of being offended by the outrage and criticism of shorter women “who are stacked) being presumed to be “little girls” and p*do material.

3. Double standards are aggressively irrational

anime fandom double standards between men vs women

This one is a big deal, but not for the right reasons.

Anime lolis are judged harshly, even when the reasons or content isn’t in any way nefarious, creepy, or outright disgusting.

Nothing is proven more by the double standards between:

  • Women of all ages viewing CUTE anime boys and the content that surrounds it.
  • And those same women calling men all sorts of names for doing the exact opposite (Loli’s in general).

Never will you see debates surrounding:

  • Anime boys who are kids.
  • Cute anime boys who may be “moe”, “kawaii”, or “innocent”.

But you’ll always see controversy and outrage when discussing anime lolis who fit the profile.

This is in spite of the fact that “cute” anime boys are often depicted by female artists in fanart as sexualized or being weirdly flirtatious with older characters who in the anime they represent are innocent, but in fanart are made to be disgustingly questionable.

eri x overhaul disgusting

Eri from MHA with Overhaul is a detestable example of this double standard taking place.

The image above can’t be considered the worst since the worst of the fan art is much more disgusting and vile.

This is merely an example of how the double standards between:

  • How women are allowed to do this in the anime community, unchecked.
  • But then men don’t get the same privilege, despite it being wrong on both sides of the fence.

Hence the deep irrationality of anime lolis in the anime community from a double standards point of view, which exists in the most obvious ways and consistently over the years and decades.

4. Fiction vs reality

fictionXvsXrealityXhikariXyorokobiXanimemotivationXmascot

For some strange reason, fiction is judged more harshly than reality.

In real life, you have child beauty pageants in the UK, USA, and so on, the same countries that are most critical of anime (out of context) and of course, lolis.

This also extends to their own teenagers being sexualized in media, celebrity culture, and Instagram, plus porn, which they’re strangely less aggressive about.

But anime, and anime lolis by extension, seem to cause more:

  • Uproar.
  • Outrage.
  • Controversy.
  • Angry comments.
  • Trolling.
  • Verbal abuse.
  • Psychological projection.

And scapegoating than their real life counterparts.

In fact in many studies show Western countries (USA, for example) have become less literate and overwhelmingly lack the ability of basic comprehension skills.

This is one of the leading causes of fiction in Western countries being irrationally judged and even equated to reality, despite anime and similar content being purely fiction (unable to affect reality in the real sense).

In the end, there are many facets to the anime loli controversy

A lot of it is indeed double standards. Plenty of it is simply because people are protective of children.

And unfortunately, some of it comes down to anime fan artists, many of who are women, who criticize men for being entertained by anime girls despite their own sick fetishes of “minors” by their own admission.

But as with many issues, it’s not always black and white, and this “anime loli” topic is far from simplistic.
