Plus Sized Elf is a title that borrows from Western society, where “Plus sized” is a nicer way of saying fat, obese, or overweight in a non offensive manner.
No different to the term “body positivity”.
But the anime Plus Sized Elf is anything but that, and contrary to the belief of a few, it’s not “woke” or fat shaming or any of these stupid terms that get misused too often.
The anime is about elves who struggle to lose weight for unique reasons, like the first blonde elf of the series who after entering Earth through a gate sees junk food as a novelty since she doesn’t have it back home.
And so, as people do when they discover new things, they overdo it and the hype overwhelms them.
With all of that said, let’s talk about reasons to start watching plus sized elf.
I’ll also give reasons why you should avoid it, and explain why the ratings so far haven’t been so favourable.
the positives of the anime “Plus Sized Elf”:
1. Relatable problems with a touch of realism
The anime is obviously ecchi mixed with fantasy elements since we have elves in the picture, and the anime is also focused on the elves more than anyone else.
The blonde elf for example loves french fries and is seen stuffing her face with fries after losing so much weight thanks to the “personal trainer” of the series who functions as an important character.
Just like in real life, people stuff their faces with this junk all of the time and feel guilty every time because they’re stuck in the habit of eating shit and more importantly, wanting to lose weight but failing to do so.
The fact that food is laced with addictive qualities doesn’t help either.
Plus Sized Elf from an outside point of view is relatable for this reason. More so for women who have found themselves or currently find themselves in a similar position.
Of all the female characters so far in this 11 minute per episode anime series, the blonde elf may be the most relatable and the most hopeless because she’s a victim of habit and her cravings.
2. Learning about ways to lose the pounds (mildly)
This ecchi anime isn’t the same as How Heavy Are The Dumbbells You Lift? Since Plus Sized Elf is about elves who struggle to lose weight and have weight problems, and the anime’s main focus of keeping off that weight and failing miserably.
But Plus Sized Elf does have similar aspects with its life lessons, educational content, and somewhat learning ways to overcome weight problems as well as the “why” of those issues.
For example, some people need others to help them lose weight. They don’t have the inner motivation to tackle the problem, and so a third party like a personal trainer keeps them disciplined.
This is a positive of the anime Plus Sized Elf, but it’s also a mid and subtle positive that wouldn’t be as effective as comparable anime shows.

3. Being able to comfortably show your flaws in a professional setting
The one thing I noticed about this anime while watching is the lack of stupid reactions from the main male MC, who functions as a trainer for the many elf girls.
Not only this but the fact he acts professionally around these elf girls and doesn’t make them feel ashamed, or embarrassed, and isn’t judgmental or talking to them in a way that makes them uncomfortable.
Even when they remove their top with their tiddies on display (in the raw version) the professional doesn’t start losing his mind over it in a cringey display of comedy like other shows.
Put simply, nobody feels objectified or minimized, and it’s strictly business with an open mind focused purely on the goal of weight loss, with no feelings attached.
4. The comedy and laughs
The anime does a good job with its comedy and doesn’t feel over the top. It makes light of things that are otherwise serious like losing weight, avoiding junk food, eating right, staying healthy, etc.
It doesn’t do it in a way that feels, we’ll say, disempowering or dehumanizing. But in a way makes it relatable in such a way that it’s not something to lose your hair over and take too seriously.
After all, when accomplishing something, putting yourself down is never conducive to achieving the goals set out for yourself.
5. Conversations between women
As usual with anime, there will always be scenes where female characters get together and talk in the public baths or wherever else. And of course, this is an ecchi so you see the juicy bits in full display.
That aside, conversations take place and as with real life when you talk it out, you clarify things and you also can draw motivation from each other, as well as learn and if the friends are general, be accepted while being encouraged.
6. Juicy visuals
If you’re straight or a Lesbian, there is plenty of FANSERVICE to enjoy from an anime like Plus Sized Elf.
Tddies, booty, and aesthetics of many kinds exist here. The anime doesn’t discriminate or hold back on celebrating the female body either.

The negatives of the anime “Plus Sized Elf”:
7. The comedy may get stale after a while
The anime is only in bits of 11 minutes per episode, so a lot shorter than normal. But at the same time, this type of comedy could get old pretty fast.
Seeing the same elves lose weight, gain weight, and then lose and gain weight yet again will become stale as far as comedy and storytelling goes.
How many times can you watch a person fail and succeed, and repeat that process while the comedy desperately tries to make each part of it as funny as possible?
8. The story isn’t expansive
This matters more for anime series that are longer and intend to go on for longer periods of time. If the anime is extremely short, it can get away with it.
In the case of this anime, it comes from a webcomic. That means there is a lot more to the story shown in the anime and all of its 12 episodes.
If more seasons are created to adapt more material, it can be predicted to end up on a downward trend as far as interest, potential, expansion, and the evolution of the story in a way that would hook and entertain.
9. “Plus Sized” is an oxymoron
From a more personal point of view, the term plus-sized is silly and is actually more negative than it is positive.
Someone watching this anime who fits that category may feel offended, regardless of whether those feelings are warranted or not.
This is because of how the anime depicts itself. It’s not like a Shounen where the characters achieve their goals with everything else ended on a happier note, even if not completely happy.
It’s more like an anime that uses “plus-sized” characters for comedic benefit and storytelling, in the form of elves, but then never fully accomplishes the goal it sets out to accomplish.
Which would be the elves losing the weight, keeping it off, and the anime coming to an end of sorts or simply continuing with a different premise after they lose the weight.
None of this seems like the case if looking at the manga or even the anime.

Why the bad ratings of Plus Sized Elf?
Other than IMDB, which gave it a 7.6/10 which is not bad, both MAL with a 6/10 and Amazon with a 2 and a half stars out of 5 shows people aren’t feeling the anime.
The reasons aren’t clear either since these are only ratings, with a lack of written reviews in the dozens.
My assumption is the title rubbing some fans the wrong way based on preconceptions. As well as female fans who see the anime as “fat shaming”, “body shaming”, and all of that psychological projection nonsense we’re used to seeing.
IMDB’s rating is accurate for me, but some of the reasons I mentioned in this post might be contributing to its declining ratings as well.

In the end, the anime is decent and much better than I expected. But beyond that, it’s a question of whether the quality can improve over time or whether it’s destined for mediocrity.
