What would happen if Crunchyroll, the biggest anime streaming platform, decided to change its ways?
By change I mean:
- Stream hentai.
- Promote hentai.
Or create a subdivision of its brand dedicated to streaming online hentai and nothing else?
Without censorship, without black lines, and without altering the material?
Let’s talk about this what-if scenario.
If Crunchyroll streamed hentai:
1. A viral moment across social media
Aeons Echo offers an immersive role-playing experience set against a visually striking backdrop, featuring a diverse ensemble of characters.
Hentai is viral by nature, but you could also argue that anime is also viral by nature. Both statements are pretty much true.
Anime goes viral a lot on social media, or YouTube, whether it be music videos, new trailers, clips of episodes, or announcements.
Hentai just takes this to a whole new level and that would be visible across social media if Crunchyroll announced their inclusion of Hentai on their platform.
And the virality would increase further if they decided to backtrack and give up the idea for whatever reason.
Virality though would be a guarantee without question or debate.
2. A surge of traffic to their website
A surge would be an understatement. The amount of traffic Crunchyroll would receive would shock the founder, CEO, employees, managers, and everyone in between.
They wouldn’t see it coming unless they smartly prepared for it, which is sensible when talking about Hentai since it’s porn. And porn does numbers that can’t be compared.
3. When dozens of hentai shows are uploaded and promoted, their site would CRASH
We all remember what happened when Crunchyroll decided to stream the episode of Dragon Ball Super between Goku and Jiren.
Their servers crashed under the weight, and it’s one of only a few anime shows capable of making Crunchyroll crash under the sheer weight of anticipation, hype, and the energy it brought to the world.
Now imagine what would happen if Crunchyroll added HENTAI to its platform, and it’s safe to say the same event would take place. Maybe even to an even more insane degree since we are talking about porn after all.
Not even the biggest sites in the world get more attention than porn does.
4. Memes would flood the internet
You know what the intern is like by now. When something major happens or something majorly unexpected, the internet gets to work with its memes.
Reddit, IMGUR, social media, Buzzfeed, or wherever else. The meme machine will kick into overdrive and it would be more than just a viral sensation.
It would be as annoying as the WILL SMITH SLAP that ended up in so many memes across so many industries to the point where you couldn’t ignore it (If Crunchyroll streamed hentai).
5. The streaming industry would be shocked
The streaming industry as we know it is all about:
- Movies.
- TV Shows.
- Anime.
- Documentaries.
And anything that can be considered “non porn” in a nutshell.
So imagine what happens when you get a mainstream service like Crunchyroll, which then adds Hentai to its catalogue.
The streaming industry would look at CR in shock on some level and the level of criticism and accusations would follow in a heartbeat.
That’s regardless of whether they stream the hentai on their main site or a subsite.
6. Anime’s biggest critics would lose their minds in the Western world
Imagine what the likes of CBR, comicbook, Mary Sue, and all the other politically correct websites would have to say about CR streaming hentai.
I don’t know what it is about some Western outlets, but in entertainment in general there is this attitude that comes across as patronising and the worst form of gatekeeping.
YouTubers would be losing their minds as well but to a much lesser extent.
Nobody would praise this move from Crunchyroll and if they did, it would NOT be Western media websites, especially when talking about the mainstream sites with a history of this sort of behaviour.
7. Crunchyroll’s additional revenue would skyrocket
It’s no surprise this would happen assuming the kinks and tweaks were ironed out (copyright, etc). Hentai is a different beast altogether when it comes to streaming.
I’d say it’s the reason why nobody has dared to attempt it yet. Well, that’s not entirely true.
There are legitimate sites that have hentai as part of their streaming platform, and they do have the rights to stream it, and they also charge a subscription for it as well.
This would be an example of what Crunchyroll could create in this scenario, which would see their additional revenue shoot through the ceiling and blast into space.
It would fundamentally change their marketing even if it was a subdivision rather than an addition to their main website, which could add a headache with the “age” issue if you get what I’m saying.
In the end, this could never happen in my eyes and is just a fun what if scenario.
Still, the outcome is as clear as day for me, and these things I’ve mentioned would play out.
