Ecchi is “risque” anime. Or what I like to call a strip tease.
It gives you what you want, but it never goes all the way.
But many ecchi anime shows take things even further by:
- Adding more fan service.
- Making things more lewd.
And ultimately making the ecchi steer so close to the line that you might as well call it Hentai.
The ecchi anime in this post will highlight these points.
Ecchi anime that almost cross over into hentai territory:
1. Shuumatsu No Harem
Shuumatsu No Harem became an anime that ended up controversial, like others on this list. It’s a world where MEN have mostly been eliminated by a “man killer” virus.
The few men vs the millions of women have lots of sex, seemingly to the man’s benefit, as they’re exploited by various women (not all).
Some women are feminist to a toxic degree, and the reality is that men are just being used for personal gain and a higher, more devious purpose.
That aside, it’s mostly light, fun, full of bonucy tiddies and booty, and of course it reaches its hand out to the line of hentai quite often.
Discover an engaging new world by combining captivating characters, vibrant visuals, and thrilling conflicts for an immensely enjoyable experience.
2. To Love Ru
To Love Ru is an anime series that isn’t the highest rated for its category, but is so famous regardless.
So many anime, so much material, and it may have the most material of any ecchi.
Lala Satalin, the main female character, is an alien, and she falls for the male MC among others in the series.
Showing up naked, getting naked, fanservice, tiddies, this anime series (and some of its characters) just don’t give a fuck.
It’s shameless in its fanservice and may be the boldest there is (drawing close to the line of hentai).
3. Redo Of Healer
Redo Of Healer might be the KING of ecchi anime that are borderline hentai. The anime does so many things that violate not just normal anime standards, but push the boundaries of ecchi far enough to make it synonymous with hentai.
Keyaru, the MC, is r*ped, tortured, and violated by a woman with a fake smile and a venomous personality that hides behind it.
He seeks revenge, then finds a way to reverse time, and violates this woman (a colonising princess, legitimately) in ways that have made Redo Of Healer deeply controversial.
Sex scenes are hentai like in so many ways, and it’s an anime you either love for the audacity or hate because it touches a nerve.
4. How Not To Summon A Demon Lord
The Demon Lord Diablo is a magnet for ladies. A regular Otaku is transported into his favourite game and gets to play as DIABLO himself, and experiences the benefits in real time.
Typical of ecchi series, the anime not just playfully, but deliberately uses “lewdness” as an excuse to push the story forward, even in ways that can appear to be either cringe or hysterically funny depending on your perspective.
For an ecchi series, the battle scenes are surprisingly good and don’t feel as mediocre as comparable shows. And the comedy, at least in S1, is actually decent.
Hentai like scenes do exist as well.
5. Shimoneta
Shimoneta is more than just a controversial, weird ecchi anime series where characters walk around with white underpants over their heads. It’s also a trend-setting, creative anime that accurately depicts (and mocks) modern Western culture in the 2010s and 2020s.
Blue Snow, as she calls her alter ego name, is branded a terrorist because she’s spreading “indecent” material around the city, which is illegal in the world of Shimoneta.
People get locked up for even daring to talk about anything lewd, even joking about it, can have the “decency police” show up at your front door.
The anime uses comedy to shine or make a point, often in a way that’s lewd, and some scenes are something straight out of a hentai series.
It’s a crazy mix.
6. Ishuzoku Reviewers
Ishuzoku Reviewers caused a lot of controversy and stirred the pot of “cancel culture” on social media, mainly Twitter, when it first released.
It also stirred the pot on MyAnimeList by becoming one of the highest rated anime of all time on the platform, even if it was artificially done by YouTubers.
The anime is about two main characters travelling to brothels, reviewing their experiences, and repeating the process.
Elf girls, slime girls, devil women, lolis, dragons, and every fetish under the sun can be visualised in this ecchi series. The sex (or implied), as well as content, is so close to being hentai that the average viewer wouldn’t know the difference.
It’s deeply controversial by design.
7. Food Wars
Food Wars, made by J.C Staff, has become one of the most famous ecchi anime of all time. It’s popular, it’s well written, it has good characters, some of the best looking food in anime, and of course, beautiful fanservice.
The latter is what makes this anime truly ecchi, but not just in a general sense, but in the way it pushes the boundaries of what is “acceptable” with fanservice or the like.
You have clothes flying off at random to metaphorically describe how delightful the food tastes, and to express how much pleasure a person gets from eating great-tasting meals.
But it also does it with a real story and decent writing, making it a standout shounen/ecchi series that still manages to almost cross the line into hentai territory on some level.
8. Kiss x Sis
Kiss x Sis is a trashy anime by nature. It’s ecchi, it’s shameless, it doesn’t give a flying fuck, and it promotes incest (or the idea of it) between two sisters and a brother.
In the case of this ecchi series, the characters aren’t “older” characters, but are teenagers, making it even more risque, controversial, and inappropriate depending on the audience.
It’s clear to see why this borders on the line of hentai, not for its visuals, but for its content (a trait found in many hentai).

9. Yosuga no Sora
This ecchi anime has become semi-famous over the years since its 2010s release. And yes, memes are one of those unsurprising ways, considering the anime is INCEST.
This is the main ingredient that makes Yosuga No Sora borderline hentai because:
- It doesn’t hold back.
- It doesn’t hesitate.
- It’s shameless about its incest.
And it’s made clear that THIS is what you’re gonna get from this ecchi anime series alongside some tongue-kissing action and your usual romance.

In the end, ecchi anime are designed to be the bridge between regular anime shows and anime that push the boundaries a little further without being “full on” hentai.
But some ecchi shows push the boundary even further than usual, almost breaking the handcuffs completely in their execution and style of risque content.
This list highlights that and will be updated with more.
