I’m not gonna call this too ironic, but in December 2022 I covered news from pornhub showing how much the Irish love Hentai, and which parts of Ireland search for different things relating to Japan.

In today’s story, an Irish man who’s approximately 20 years old was caught with hentai on his phone, by which point he turned white like a petrified anime character and this led to a court case behind closed doors.

Those who prosecuted him weren’t happy with what they found on his phone.

According to breakingnews.Ie, the man from Donegal, Ireland, was first discovered to have Hentai on his phone as an 18 year old.

2 years before this news report.

QUOTE:

“Aaron Davies (20), appeared at Letterkenny Circuit Court after gardaí found ‘hentai’ on his phone after it was seized.

Mr Davies was arrested, and gardaí said he was genuinely shocked when he was told that the images were classed as child pornography.

The images did not feature real children, but were animated images involving children being sexually abused.

Detective Garda David Leahy told the court that he had arrested Davies and took him to Letterkenny Garda Station for interview on September 10th, 2021 in relation to the 16 images found on his phone.”

The backstory the court believes is the young man’s motivation:

“Mr Nolan said his client was a very intelligent young man and a gifted guitarist who had studied music, but who had suffered a difficult upbringing.

His parents had split when he was young, and he had been smoking cannabis from an early age. He moved onto harder drugs from the age of 17 after falling into bad company.”

In the end, the 20 year old Irish man was given 80 hours of community service for his offences.

This was a trade-off given instead of giving the man 4 months of prison outright.

What do you think of this story?

It’s clear to me why the images weren’t shown in any detail, making it harder to verify whether the courts and the system are misrepresenting, misinterpreting, or exaggerating the definition of “child” in this case.

But either way, this happens every now and then and has been in recent years, despite the information being highly confidential.
