What defines a calm anime character?
Here’s what I say:
- It’s almost impossible to make them angry or furious (within reason).
- They’re great in high pressure situations.
- Being around them is relaxing and puts you at ease.
- Always easy-going.
- They’re level-headed and easy to deal with in general.
Calm anime characters are sometimes strategic and have good leadership skills too.
So with those definitions laid out, here are some male and female characters worth mentioning.
The Most Chilled Anime Characters:
1. Tami Nishimikado (Hanayamata)
Being around Tami is like sitting by the ocean in the evening. She’s calm, cool, chilled and the complete opposite of aggressive.
Even when people are being difficult or negative, Tami’s calm nature doesn’t break in the slightest.
That’s what makes her a likable character, as she’s able to settle conflicts between people and put them at ease with her natural charm.
2. Archer (Fate Stay Night)
Archer is a lot like Byakuya Kuchiki, except Archer is more talkative and expressive in comparison.
He’s the type to speak his mind without holding back, no matter how harsh or straightforward.
And in difficult situations, Archer never loses his cool. Always staying on top of his challenges and remaining focused on what needs to be done.
3. Piccolo (Dragon Ball Z)
Piccolo is introverted by nature, and it takes a LOT to get his blood boiling (make him angry).
Even when he’s overwhelmed in a fight, or when the situation is gruesome, Piccolo stands tall and keeps a level head without being overwhelmed by the pressure.
And in general he’s a pretty chilled guy.
4. Kanna Makino (Tamako Market)
Kanna Makino isn’t phased by much, making her one of the more “easy-going” characters in anime.
She’s easy to be around because her calm personality and chilled persona.
Like when her friend Midori needed emotional support, and Kanna Makino cheered her up. Keeping a positive attitude and approaching Midori’s problems with a level head.
5. Ririko Oribe (Sakura Quest)
Ririko Oribe is quiet, but not shy. She has no problem at all when it comes to socializing and communication.
And she’s surprisingly intelligent (because she reads a lot).
Most of the time she’s chilled and relaxed, and it takes a lot for Ririko to stress out in almost any situation.
6. Soma Yukihira (Food Wars)
Soma Yukihira is the definition of confidence without being arrogant or big-headed.
Instead of losing his cool or screaming and shouting when someone insults him, he bounces back with a positive attitude and optimism.
That’s what makes it so hard to dislike Soma. He’s so chilled about everything that his personality tends to rub off on others.
Turning enemies into friends and friends into “closer” friends.

7. Sousuke Sagara (Full Metal Panic)
It takes a lot to phase a guy like Sousuke Sagara. He’s the calm but serious type who’s a little uptight and alert because of his military background.
But he’s always calm no matter the situation or person he’s dealing with. Never being the one to stress out or worry over small things.
8. Katsuragi Keima (The World God Only Knows)
All Katsuragi cares about is gaming and playing dating sims. Outside of his own little world, he takes a logical approach to everything.
And is too easy-going most of the time to care or get too emotional about ordinary things.
9. Osamu Dazai (Bungou Stray Dogs)
Osamu has to be the weirdest character on this list.
For whatever reason he has a strange interest in suicide, but not in the way that assumes he’s depressed or at breaking point.
He almost takes nothing seriously (meaning he’s laid back) and it’s impossible to break his spirit.
Osamu’s too cool and calm for that shit.
10. Nozaki Umetarou (Nozaki Kun)
Nozaki is a Mangaka in the anime: Monthly Girls Nozaki Kun.
He’s one of the tallest anime characters around (for a school series) and is too laid back to panic about anything.
Not even for a deadline he has to meet for his Manga, or anything else considered important or urgent.
11. Shibuya Kazuya (Ghost Hunt)
Even when this anime starts getting crazy (and jumpy) with all the ghost missions, Shibuya never gets anxious or worried.
He handles it like a boss and stays as calm as a leaf. Breezing through it despite the madness involved.
12. Kanade Jinguji (Best Student Council)
Kanade Jinguiji’s not just calm, she’s wise, thoughtful, empathetic and gentle.
That’s why she’s one of the most loved characters in the Best Student Council series.
It’s almost as if she doesn’t have the ability to get angry because she’s so naturally calm and serene.
13. Sesshomaru (Inuyasha)
Sesshomaru’s a powerful demon lord and the older brother of Inuyasha.
All he cares about is fighting opponents stronger than himself to test his abilities.
And even in the grimmest type of situation he’s composure doesn’t change in the slightest.
Standing tall and staying calm even if his life is in danger.
14. Hina (Hinamatsuri)
Hina’s a new favorite in 2018. Who easily takes the top spot for calm characters who never stress out.
Similar to Kanade Jinguji, Hina on the surface seems like she doesn’t know how to get angry.
But in Hina’s case, even though it happens it’s as a rare as seeing a unicorn boarding an aeroplane with luggage.
She’s one of the most chilled characters ever.
15. Kino (Kino’s Journey)
You won’t see a character like Kino mentioned in similar lists like this.
Kino’s too headstrong to let her emotions get the better of her actions.
In a lot of ways she’s similar to Hina from Hinamatsuri. Both in height and stature.
16. Jin (Samurai Champloo)
Jin is another guy who’s too chilled to bother with nonsense.
He’s a man of honor and pride, never straying from his goals, ideals or beliefs.
And if you do the opposite, he won’t hesitate to give you a lecture about it.
17. Yoshino Koiwai (Masamune Kun No Revenge)
Yoshino’s one of those characters who’s so cool and laid back, that it’s as if she has no emotions.
But of course she does. She’ll only show her emotions to a select few people.
Everybody else gets either the silent treatment, or the barrier she puts up for anyone she doesn’t trust.
18. Johan Liebert (Monster)
Johan is calm for the wrong reasons. After all – he’s a serial killer who has no empathy for his victims, or anyone.
He’s the true definition of cold. And his “good looks” is what makes him more deceiving and cunning.
19. Akame (Akame Ga Kill)
Akame is another character who’s cold and calm. At least on the surface.
But like Johan, her upbringing is full of one tragedy after another.
Regardless of her harsh childhood, she’s still a good person at heart. But her calm and closed off personality makes it hard for anyone to get too close and intimate.
20. Heine Wittgenstein (The Royal Tutor)
Heine Wittgenstein is the royal tutor in a palace for 4 prince’s.
He’s a man who’s sharp, diligent, calm, well-educated and observant.
And it’s not like he grew up with a silver spoon in his mouth. He worked his way up through self-education, which is why he ends up with the opportunity to teach in a Royal palace.
- Saya Sasamiya (Asterisk War).
- Homura Akemi (Madoka Magica).
- Kusuo Saiki (The Disastrous Life Of Saiki K).
- Chizuru Hishiro (ReLife).
- Tanaka (Tanaka Kun Is Always Listless).
- Ayanokouji (Classroom Of The Elite).
