9+ GREAT Anime Like Kaguya Sama You Need To Try

Kaguy Sama: Love Is War is a rom com/romance anime unlike your average or typical series these days. Since the anime began in 2019 its carved out a niche for itself.

Season 3 is now airing.

The plot follows Kaguya Shinomiya and Shirogane. Two student council members who like and fancy each other, but are too proud and stubborn to admit it to each other.

The anime uses this for comedic effect as they battle it out to try and force the other to confess their feelings and their romantic interests.

This where “Love Is War” comes into the picture from the anime’s title.

Here’s a list of anime that are just like Kaguya Sama!

1. Masamune Kun No Revenge

Msamune Kun No Revenge is an anime that released some years ago. It starts with the backstory of Masamune Makabe, a guy who’s in shape, fit, exercises, and takes care of his physical appearance.

In the past he was a “fat” kid and his crush rejected him while pointing out this fact (his weight).

From there he swears to get revenge on Aki Adagaki, the girl who broke his heart and he does it by making her fall in love with him so he can then break up with her afterwards.

That’s not how it turns out though…

2. Kakegurui

Kakegurui (Compulsive Gambler) starts out with Yumeko Jabami, and she leads the show and carries it to an extreme degree. She’s that important as a character.

She loves gambling, and unlike most gamblers in this particular school, Yumeko loves the thrill of it, gets high off it, and is even willing to risk it all to gain it all.

She’ll go that far for the rush of the game.

When students lose in a gabling match they’re forced to do whatever the winner wants them to do, and are of course in debt to them because of their loss.

3. Shikimori’s Not Just A Cutie

Shikimori’s Not Just A Cutie is a wholesome series just like My Dress Up Darling and Tonikaku KAWAII. But it also has similarities to Kaguya Sama in some ways.

Izumi is the boyfriend, and Shikimori’s his girlfriend. She’s cute, but she also has her “cool” moments when she’s in the zone.

Both characters know each others parents and are well acquainted, showing how close their relationship. And their chemistry is one of the most genuine in the romance genre.

The comedy is slightly different to Kaguya Sama but fans can still appreciate both anime.

4. Gamers

Gamers is self explanatory. Anime characters who are all gamers, mostly, So expect a lot of gamer references, jokes, comedy, and even cringe moments at times.

Karen Tendou is the main female character who’s a popular girl, gorgeous, liked by most, and she’s attentive and respectful to others in spite of their status.

Amano is a regular guy who meets her at random in a game shop, and after tons of misunderstandings they start to build a connection.

Similar to Kaguya Sama, Gamers thrives on misunderstandings and romantic mental gymnastics to tell stories and express its comedy.

5. Maid Sama

Maid Sama is lead by a slightly masculine female character called Misaki Ayuzawa. She’s a textbook feminist who hates all men despite the majority of men doing her no wrong.

This is a result of “daddy” issues since her father ran off and left the family with debt.

As a student council president she makes life hard for guys, but onw guy called Usui Takumi catches her eye, protects her at critical moments, and is able to break through to her. And she starts to loosen up and grow as a person.

Their romance together also starts to make progress and the anime’s rom com improves drastically.

6. Monthly Girls Nozaki Kun

Monthly Girls Nozaki Kun is about Chiyo Sakura, an orange haired 16 year old girl who’s fallen for a DENSE protagonist who creates his own manga.

Everything Nozaki (the guy) knows about girls is from manga pretty much.

Since the anime’s written in a parody style Chiyo’s romance never really goes where she wants it to with Nozaki, but that’s the point. Misunderstandings are par for the course.

It’s the kind of anime you’ll either love for how fresh it is, or you won’t because you’ve seen so many rom com anime already.

7. Toradora

Toradora follows Taiga Aisaka and Ryuuji Takasu. There are side characters like Minori Kushieda and Kitamura.

Ryuuji is a clean freak and is the one in the house who does a lot of the cleaning. Taiga is a Tsundere who abuses Ryuuji to an extreme before the anime starts to make serious progress with character development.

Minori is the cheerful girl with a good sense of humor, and Kitamura is the chill guy who’s smart and everyone gets along with him.

The later half of the series makes Toradora one of the most rewarding anime shows in the romance genre for its drama and emotional episodes.

8. Oregairu

Oregairu is a bit of an unconventional romance anime series, just like Kaguya Sama.

It’s about 3 characters mainly:

Hachiman Hikigaya.
Yuigahama.
Yukinoshita Yukino.

But there’s also important side characters like Iroha Isshiki.

The plot doesn’t develop as fast as other romance, and there’s a lot of reading in between the lines as the anime makes progress, episode to episode.

Once you’ve got round to season 2 and especially season 3 things will make a lot of sense as it wraps up a lot of clues and bits of the story that don’t connect at first.

9. School Rumble

School Rumble is an anime from the 2000’s and is a staple in the rom com community. It’s probably the inspiration behind Aho Girl (the banana element and what not).

Kenji Harima is a manga artist in the making and an ex-delinquent. He’s walking a new path now and it’s all partly because of Tenma, an airheaded girl he’s fallen for.

Tenma’s sister Yakumo is the more mature of the two, and there are other characters like Eri (blonde girl) and Makoto (blue haired martial artist) that are important to the story.

It still needs a 3rd season to this day, but there are 2 seasons to get through and the comedy will kill you laughing. It’s one of the original OG’s of anime comedy.
